You gotta be kiddin'... if you can get anything free in Manhattan, let me know.. I think they even charge you for a glass of water.
No, really, I doubt very much if you can find anyplace for free or anyone to teach you for free.. The best way to get started is to go to the Internet and click in frenchgrammar.com or something like that and it will bring up all sorts of things but unfortunately.. NOT the sounds which are necessry for you to learn a language.. thus, that would mean having to buy some CD-roms or something like that

For Free, I would say try the public library, When I lived in NYC they had books and CD's on learning foreign languages. Or find yourself a french boyfriend and have him teach ya.

For free, it is tough... try to barter.
Go to any university or college, and park a post looking for french conversation and lessons, in exchange of something you can help a student with: be it with cooking, with helping with taxes or whatever - pick something you are good at.
Otherwise, look on the web, you will find free lessons - see http://www.frenchassistant.com/default.asp . It will take an effort (nothing of value comes from free) and time, but with lessons, memorization, and someone to help you with prononciation, you will see a difference.
;) a french boyfriend is not a bad idea, and has some added benefits...

I don't know of anyone who would actually provide free French lessons, esepcially if it's NY we're talking about. Everything's $$$! But why don't you try the library and look up some French learning audio CDs or books?
