The people alive at the time of slavery are all dead. What annoys many people is to be told that they have to pay for the disgusting behaviour of the white slave owners, when they had nothing to do with it and could not have stopped it. Little is ever said about the thousands of whites who sacrified their lives in America's bloodiest War - the civil war which was fought to end slavery.

Also the black man is not the only person in History to have been enslaved. Most of humanity, including white people, were enslaved for most of their history. Affirmative action and hatred against white people do nothing to improve the relations between the races. When one insists on being a victim sometimes it's hard for others not to respond accordingly.

And if people didn't care you wouldn't get such a response to your question.

While it is true that some white Americans really have changed, generally speaking, your mother is absolutely right. We like to say the South lost the war, but that was only the military and political struggle. The South actually won the culture war as, with the end of the Civil War, the North embraced the Jim Crow segregation and hostility to African-Americans that was norm in the South. It is no coincidence that slavery ended just as the first federal prisons opened...or that many of the first inmates were African-Americans...thus beginning the pattern of incarceration that has become endemic among African-American males. Or consider this: up until his assassination, the closest Martin Luther King came to danger was NOT in Birmingham, but in Chicago, where whites rioted against his appearance there. Or consider the savagery of the whites who rioted against desegregation in Boston; the result was that school buses full of African-American children on their way to ELEMENTARY SCHOOL were overturned in the streets. America has not only failed to live up to its creed that all men are created equal, it would appear that in the last several years it has actually gone backwards. The most stunning thing, if not enraging, is the sheer level of denial that white America has about the racism that is alive and well in its heart and in its institutions.

Some have and some haven't. My Dad and Father in Law are not pro slavery or anything like that but they are what many call 'old school' times were way different than they are now. I don't agree with all they say but their views and beliefs are still the same and I don't try to change them either. In much of our older generations and passing it thru to our offspring yes many white people still feel the same way. My relatives have black friends, and they have for many years, its just the 'interatial' part that bothers them. Do not judge me, for I am neutral and believe, "To each his own" as long as it does not directly involve me, I don't care what you do. Love comes in many colors. In todays society I think whites and blacks refer to "slavery" too much to get the things they want. Slavery is illegal and it's in the past. I've heard it said, put them on a boat and send them back home. Well, I think if white people hadn't been so damn lazy to do their own damn work, this never would have been and issue to begin with. Most of the generations that were involved in the slavery movement and even after it was abolished have died out and so have many of their opinions. Racism and racists will continue to exist in society no matter how much we wish it didn't, we just have to be the wiser generation and make the choice for ourselves and leave ignorance out of it. I am 35 and three of my best friends since I was old enough to walk are black folk and share the same opinion about interatial relationships. Namely because their parents brought them up with the same beliefs that white people shared then. They are proud to be an all black family and keeping their ancestors and offsping in a non mixed culture. I don't think that makesTHEM racist people do you? I personally don't understand why, such a powerful people that blacks/african american have become over the last couple hundreds of years would want to clash with those that they resent so much to begin with. I have heard numerous blacks make the comments, we are gonna wipe out the white race and have all one race and they raped our women. Kinda defeats the perpose of trying to change the opinions of whites. How can anyone expect opinions to change in people when you hear something like that?Their ancestors fought hard to get these kids today the freedoms that they weren't allowed then. They fought even harder to get from under the ruled thumb of whites. But yet they seem to want to fall into the group that they fought so hard to be free of. I'm not predjudice, just confused. There will be a day of reconing on and in this world and it won't matter to God what color you are, black, white, hispanic, or purple or yellow. What will be their (people in general) answer for all the added tension when that day comes?

Of course they have. If they didn't black Americans would not have the same rights as white Americans. If not there would still be segregation. I don't know where you live, but I live down south Baton Rouge Louisiana. We just see each other as people here. Not black, brown, red, yellow, or white. We treat each other the same. And I'm not a white person. I'm just telling you so you don't feel that I am showing favoritism toward my race. I'm a Puerto Rican, American. I think your mother is paranoid. She should get some white friends so she can see there is no conspiracy going on with white people.

I think your Mother is over doing it a bit. Have we, I am mostly white, changed completely? No! Will we ever? NO! But notice the word "completely". That will never happen because nothing in our world is 100% anything. Have we improved? Definitely and I am quite proud of that fact. My father is part Cherokee and I remember when we went to a bar and had a whiskey drink to celebrate the federal government overthrowing the law prohibiting the sale of whiskey to 'Indians" as they called us. My mother was French from New Orleans, so I've lived through both sides of the issue. Tell your mother to join up with the good Doctor and celebrate has been accomplished and work towards betterment rather than living in the past.
Vaya con DIOS

if white people had not changed their ways there would still be slavery. For the most part everyone has changed their ways. But there will always be a bit of racism. People just can not handle differences too well.

Can't relate. I live in a diverse CA suburb. Immediate neighbors are hispanic, black, asian, and white. A little further out includes more of the above and Indian, Middle Eastern, and a variety of others. Same environment at work. Some people have issues with other races, most don't. Those with issues, usually are due to prejudices reinforced by prejudices against them - flows all ways. It's a vicious circle that most of us have stepped out of. Suggest that you do, too. Life is much richer that way.

dear Louise, did you ask your mother why she says so? or do you agree with her still? I know it's hard to believe such statement as it could be easily taken for a dislike or hate to the white folks which invariably place her in the place of a black woman. Nobody will care to know if she is a white woman even at that a vacuum of doubt will still linger. Anyway, i think your mother is not entirely wrong in her assertion because i sometimes think so myself. But, i also think white peoples' behaviour or attitude to blacks has nothing to do with the colour of their skin. however, i could not place what that is really.
Nevertheless, i believe quite a number of them are very friendly to blacks. Thus, i think this very thing that is between them is not on the surface but, skin deep which, means that both black and white has to fight against it for a better and improved coexistence.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "changed their ways". I don't see people being held and forced to work against there will anywhere. What I do see is too many people of ALL races sitting around waiting for a handout. It sickens me that I bust my a** everyday and I still feel like I'm getting nowhere. And if people hadn't changed their ways, wouldn't slavery still be around????

Some have, some have not. Some whites in slavery days were decent, and some Black Africans caught others and sold them to slavers. Slavery continues today. It still continues in the USA. Ask the police.
The slaves are prostitutes now.
