No, when it was named only men were accessing them. A better question to ask everybody is why manhole covers are round. I ask that at every job interview I give. Some interviewees look scared.

No coz at the time it was a hole for workmen to use to get into the sewers, times have changed but them name has stuck, it isn't MAN-HOLE a mans hole but MANHOLE a sewer cover!
