Ok here is what you need to do, first of all if you haven't already done it, make a copy of the product key, and put it somewhere safe, failing that when you buy windows, and install it for the first time, you have 30 days to activate windows, in which you can do it either over the internet or by doing a telephone registration, so I am guessing that you have activated windows via the internet? Anyway Microsoft store your registration details on there server, so if you was to loose your product key, you just phone them up on there freephone number, and they will go through a series of securtiy questions as in your personal details!

I hope this helps?

No problem. Download and install Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder (http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml). It will search for your Windows product key and display it for you. And, best of all, it is totally free. Here is a short description of it:

"The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Windows Vista, Office 97, Office XP, and Office 2003." -- publisher's description

There are programs for this, but I'd say the right way to go is to call MS's support line and describe the problem, and hopefully they'll send you a new one.
