Not necessarily serious, no. Pediadontists I've worked with suggest SOME type of oral / dental cleansing, of course, but it can be done in different ways. Perhaps a traditional toothbrush isn't the answer? While your little one is in the tub, I'm sure you're right there - or his mum is - monitoring him, Go about your routine - brush your own teeth and praise yourself. out loud. Try a gently vibrating brush, with a cartoon character on it, for instance. Say, "OOH! Time to brush my teeth. Use the (batery-operated brush, on your own teeth. Laugh and giggle and say "OH! That tickles!" etc. Don't offer the child any further exposure. I'll bet that within the first three times of witnessing this, natural two-year old curiosity hets the best of him. You'll want to have another ready...be hesitant at first, such as saying "I don't know - you need to be a big boy..." etcetera. Your positive attitude and good role modeling, with just a tad of 'reverse psychology ' will more than likely do the trick. In the meantime, offer foods that are natural tooth cleaners, such as apples. Good luck!!

He should be able to brush his own teeth at that age. I would take him to the store and let him pick out his own tooth brush and let him walk around while he is brushing. They just came out with a toothpaste that turns your teeth blue so that you know where you need to brush more. I'm not sure what it is called but I know it is made for kids. Also, let him see the adults brushing their teeth and make it fun. Like make a game out of it. Let it be his idea to brush his teeth because he sees how much fun the adults are having.

let him choose his toothbrush, maybe an electric one & let him help do it. Be sure to tell him the importance of cleaning his teeth. My mate had a very similar problem so she took her son to the dentist just to make sure there was nothing wrong with his gums etc & the dentist told him (very kindly i must add) that his teeth would fall out. He also showed the little lad photos of peoples mouths & teeth who didnt look after & brush their teeth. We now call him the tooth cleaning policeman! no problems since!
good luck, it's probably just the age babe :o)
I think the person above me has a brilliant approach.

Get him his favorite cartoon character toothbrush and toothpaste. Put just a dab of toothpaste on the brush and hand it to him. Allow him to wander around while brushing. Be sure he sees adults brushing their teeth to learn how it's properly done. It will take some time to learn, but be patient, he'll come around once he learns that it is not a punishment. Good Luck...

Try making a game out of it...it may take time but if you can make it fun he'll be more likely to accept it...the worst thing that can be done is holding him still and forcing it...he's too scared/mad then to realize that the tooth brushing isn't painful, he's too upset at being restrained and that just reinforces the idea to him that tooth brushing isn't anything he wants to be a part of...

Dont fret. But what ever you do please try not to make this a long standing war. You will only create a monster. just give him/her the toothbrush and have the child brush when you brush. make a game of it. you might also consider a mild toothpaste, a acartoon character or something. you can also teach him/her to floss. sit the child in the floor and have the child bend his head back onto the sofa. then you floss with the child backwards to you. this worked great for my son when he was in braces. most of all dont panic.

make sure you are using a kids toothpaste because they do not burn the mouth like adult paste does. This experience may have make him scared of toothpaste. If you can find a timmy tooth video to show him that would help. I saw them for 2.00 at big lots. if he doesn't brush he doesn't get any sweets. give him lots of praise when he does brush. clap, etc. My sister used a bicycle horn and they only got to blow it when they brushed there teeth or used the potty. lots of fanfare.

You have to make it fun. You might try that new product on the market made by Listerine for kids that they use before they brush, they rinse their mouth with it. It turns all the gooky stuff on the teeth blue so the kids can have fun trying to brush off the blue.
