I took a CRAYON when I went. It solved the graphite particulant problem posed by the pencil pushers, but it took me millions of dollars in research to determine which color out of my box of 64 to take with me.
Oh.... purple was the eventual choice.

Using a pencil is not a wise idea at all. Reason is that the graphite particles will be suspended in the air at zero gravity. Hence the people will breath this air and become sick. Therefore the need to develop a spacepen is justified. If the Americans develped this pen, it shows that they cared about the long term health of their men!

The Russians took a pencil because that was the best technology they had available. Pens weren't introduced until just last year.

Ok, so, on the face of it, the pen idea looks over geek stupid, yes?
yeah, easy for you to say but try wearing a space suit for 5 days that has a pencil shaving in it, that'll wipe the smile off your face for sure
