cat urine is very strong smelling try vinegar, clean the spot, spray it with vinegar, might have to do a few times, when you do get the smell out spray your carpet with a citrus scent if you can stand it,cats don't like citrus. good luck

This is very hard smell to get rid of, that's why I won't have a cat. It gets into anything and stays. Start with new carpet and you may even have to replace the sub-floor. My mother in law had six cats and not all of them would use the box. After she got rid of them, I remodeled the room where the box was and the cats usually hung out. I had to tear out the carpet, the subfloor (plywood), the drywall, and the insulation in the walls. This did the trick, but it was a lot of work.

first of all your cat is just missing you husband. Animals can't talk and their behavior even though bad is their way of expressing the anger of the missing family member.
As for the smell, as long as you have gotten her to stop the non acceptable behavior you could try vaccuming with moth balls in the vaccum bag. Sprinkle plain old baking soda on to the carpet and allow this to sit for a while. Just add about three month balls to the vaccum bag and allow the house to air out as much as possible to help ease the smell.
This is what I did when I and my family moved into a rent house that the previous owners had allowed the animals to pee and #2 every where. Even steam cleaning and shampooing the carpet did very little and since I have repeatively done this hardly anyone notices the oder.

Pour a generous amount of baking soda all over the affected area. Leave it there for a day or two to soak up the odor. Sweep up most of the baking soda and then vacuum. Now, shampoo the carpet. This should work.
Sounds like the poor kitty really misses your hubby!

The carpets will need to be steamcleaned. Are the cats fixed because they're more likely to pee on the carpet if they're not.

I used this stuff called natures miracle and at first it smelled so much worse until it dried all the way through. Make sure you soak enough to get into the padding as well. Good luck
