they can, but if you hold a treat over it's head and it looks up at it, it will automactically sit down, some weird reflex i suppose! i heard it somewhere last week!

If what you are saying is true---what they are saying is--that when dogs eyes meet--if ONE DOESn't turn their eyes away --AND WITH HUMANS_ they wil bite (OR FIGHT), because they are trying to win that territory(More or less). A German Shepherd could have had my dog's whole head in it's mouth, but luckily for me , she was afraid enough to look down to the ground--and he left her alone--scared the CRAP OUT OF ME!!!!!

Dogs can & do look up - as a matter of fact, it is one of the criteria they need to meet to be trained as guide dogs. Breeds that tend to look up more make the best ones - Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Boxers, Standard Poodles, etc. If they didn't look up, how would they be able to safely guide the blind?

It's an old wives' tale ... of course dogs can look up. Ours always looks up when he wants a biscuit or when he's getting told off for pi**ing on the floor! He's never very happy when that happens though ...

i think maybe you have the pig, babe, mixed up with the dog. pigs have a harder time looking upward because of the anatomy of their neck. dogs can look up.

My dog lays his head on my lap and looks up all the time. Its really sweet.

You mean, physically look their heads upwards? Offer a dog a treat way above his head... and he will look up!

Yeah that saying is rubbish. My dog can look up, and not just by moving his head, he can actually roll his eyeballs upwards!!

Thats an urban myth. I spoke about this with someone recently. Its completely untrue.
