Be patient, move slowly, don't reach out towards him- let him come to you. I always carry a small dog treat in my purse or pocket for just these types of situations. Every time you see the dog - offer a treat (peace offering?), talk to him directly as a greeting and praise him when he responds favorably. Eventually each encounter will become more open and rewarding as you gain his trust ande respect. Good luck- the friend you make will be worth the effort as dogs stay friends forever without human conditional relationship faults.

Are you just wanting the dog to like you or has the dog been aggressive to you? If you are just trying to make friends, the other posters' suggestions should work just fine.

If the dog has been aggressive to you, your friend needs the help of a trainer or behaviorist to get the dog comfortable around people. There are very specific steps to be taken to handle aggressive behavior; a trained eye is needed to determine what to do and when to move to the next step.

Take walks with your friend and his dogs.... have your friend give him a command like "sit" and let you give the dog the treat afterwards..If the dog will play fetch then go play fetch with it in the yard.
And don't ask people on yahoo, try at a dog forum :-)
