Niue was briefly a protectorate of the UK before being ceded to New Zealand. New Zealand granted it self-government in 1974. The Niuean language is part of the Polynesian subgroup of the Austronesian language family. It is most closely related to Tongan, but is also related to languages like Maori and Hawaiian.

It's spelled Niue, not Nuie. Niue has never been
geographically part of the Cook Islands. It is an
isolated island, not grouped with any other. For a
short time it was included in the same administrative unit of the British Empire as the Cook Islands, but it has been separate a long time.
