Here's how you find out. Go to the beach far away from the stench of the city, estuary or sewer, wait for "half tide" close your eyes and take a deep breathe. Now do it again with your mouth slightly open. That's what oysters taste like. Yummmm.
Now if you cook them the flavour intensifies but you lose that luxurious texture

They taste like the sea...at least to me anyway. I love oysters, my brother and I go to an oyster bar in S.C. where the ONLY things on the menu are raw oysters and beer. That rocks!

I absolutely HATE oysters...this will be due to a terrible experience with the little buggers. My boyfriend took me out to a fancy restaurant for Valentine's Day and so I thought I would try and be sexy and have oysters and champagne (apparently aphrodisiac qualities?)...I was so severely ill with food poisoning after eating a bad oyster-I cant quite describe the carnage but it wasnt pretty....suffice to say was hardly romantic....I had to go to hospital and was unable to stand up for 4 days :-(

Taste like the sea - if they are quality oysters i.e Loch Fynne.
Should not taste of snot or anything else but brine. Have a bad one and you're dead!

There are a myriad of different kinds of oysters..,
Each and every variety is unique in it's flavor , as well as texture. Boston.., Baltimore.., D.C.., all have some exquisite restaurants that offer the full array of oysters for the sampling.

They taste like the sea. They are quite a difficult taste and I dont like them at all. Its like eating sea water = having never eaten large globs of snot I cant agree or disagree with the general consensus on their texture. I would say they are slippery but good ones should not be rubbery.

Anyway, best option is to try them for yourself and see what they taste and feel like to you!

It's impossible to describe the taste of an oyster, as impossible as it is to describe the smell of a rose.
The smell or taste is not fishy, if that's what you are afraid of.
Not everybody likes oysters, but those who do - like me - LOVE them, especially on the half shell with a nice glass of dry white wine next to it.
Do yourself a favor, try them!

if you have oysters rockefeller then they taste snotty, but that's y they use tabasco sauce. fried oysters taste different, maybe that's because you are tasting the stuff they were fried in.
