$$$$$$ or just cleaning the coffee maker, sometimes. Hard water, arsenic, employee urine misplacement.... you pick.

The difference between good coffee and bad coffee is in the taste of the drinker, just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Just another comment, that has nothing to do with the answering of this question. I do not see what this has to do with Religion & Spirituality.

The type of beans used and the brewing method.
2 types: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica is grown at higher altitudes and is considered the best and most expensive.
If brewed with freshly roasted and ground beans coffee of either type is considered superior in taste.
If brewed in a paperless method ie: without a strainer, as in a french press or percolator, a superior taste is achieved.
Coffee should be stored in an airtight container. That is the main point in storage. It does not need to be kept refrigerated.
Many companies say the blend of various beans from different regions and precise roasting methods make a difference too.
Some people rave about Kona from Hawaii as being the best in the world. Usually these are people from Hawaii.

The package! Coffee Companies get to crank up the price when they make us wait in line for 30 minutes, only to place our orders in a special code (example: an Espresso Macchiato with a shot of Low-Fat Mocha Syrup & Sugar Free Whipped Cream Topping). Otherwise it would just be - COFFEE and that's just so ten years ago.

The taste, its consistency and how it affects your digestion (Bad coffee doesn't go too well in the stomach) differentiates good coffee and bad coffee.
