I am Japanese. For as long as I remember gifts have been given and recieved for any and all occasions. Often, it is in the form of money. For little children or babies....you can always have something representing the year they were born in. Chinese horoscope ...not western. This is always lucky. Also fruit and food gifts. Jade is a good gift for health but I wouldn't get a traditional Japanese gift. Make it American instead. Mostly the big "gifts" come when the baby is one and has survived it's first year. It can sometimes be "unlucky" to celbrate a new child too soon.....out of superstition...the spirits could find him and take him back.

The Japanese do like to exchange gifts. Gifts are given and received with both hands. Any gift as long as it is heartily given is always appreciated. A Japanese dress would, however, be really cool!

Just remember this:
The number four is considered inauspicious because it is pronounced the same as the word for death (shi). Therefore, one should not make presents that consist of four pieces, etc.

If I were you, I'd do the same thing you would for any other co-worker whose wife just had a baby. For Japanese couples, baby presents are fine.

I used to live over there.

It is customary for Japanese to accept gifts. It is also rude to show you do not like it.

Do not try to 'go japanese' you will fail. Be modest in your gift and give what you would give to a 'fellow country man'. This will go best. Tell (even if you suspect they know) It is customary to bring gifts.

They will love it, trust me.

Hi,
I'm oriental i know it best, you can give them a little cake with their names on it or the baby's name , either way, they will love it,it doesn't matter how much the gift cost, it matters the way you give it.
don't ever give them video games or fishes. omg, its not like their kids r growing up that fast. and its no use to them.
