Open Office is a most popular open source Office solution. It does virtually everything that MS Office does. You can also exchange your documents between MS Office and Open Office.
Enjoy it.

From your description, you must be referring to Open Office (you can download it from: http://www.openoffice.org/ ). Open Office is the best alternative to MS Office, that is free and open source, and is similar on some way to MS Office.

I'm a HUGE Corel WordPerfect fan, and I have to say go with Corel Office Suite . . . you won't be disappointed. In my opinion, it wipes out M$ Office. I have been using WP since 1993 . . . when it was on a blue screen. *lol* I have used both MS and Corel, and Corel had more words in it's database, more tools, and so many options, leaving it more versatile than M$ Office. It also has a huge conversion list where it can even upconvert documents formatted in WordStar or Amipro! Also any MS Word documents past or present, of course. Thanks!

Lotus Smartsuite is pretty groovy, but unfortunately it is not free. The spreadsheet is called Lotus 1-2-3 (and is the granddaddy of spreadsheets). The word processor is called WordPro and is far more versatile than MS Word, and the database manager is called Lotus Approach, and learning it is a piece of cake compared to MS Access (which is a nightmare to master).

I suggest you to use OpenOffice.org, this is Open Source. It has a Word Processor, SpreadSheet, Presentation Software (same as power point), and much more. You can open all of your MS-Office files and edit them.
Hope this helps, Regards.

Kubuntu may well be a great decision. a million. The setting up is quite trouble-free 2. Takes no time to setup 3. Reformatting is a breeze (choose the "finished disk" decision) 4. Comes with OpenOffice totally loaded. yet previously you start up, ascertain you save any information(different stuff) you % to maintain to CD / DVD or floppy. you will lose each little thing on the disk in the technique.
