Because there are a LOT of suppressed emotions like anger, fear and sadness hidden in the dark corners of our consciousness. These are all healthy emotions and necessary for our well-being.
Unfortunately our culture and religions view these emotions as something evil. Instead of teaching us to express and understand these emotions we are taught to discard them and feel guilt. We are guided only to love, respect and to be grateful. That's a perversion of human nature.
Thus when people answer questions written by the "true believers", they finally can let this anger to come out. Since they learned it's something to feel guilty about, anger has turned in to hate and that which could have been constructive is now destructive. Internet provides them anonymity, which makes it possible for them to let it come out. It's natures way to heal.
You could ask: "Why do so many people here feel the need to share good will to get their point across?"

Dear Debra,
nice question, 10 points. People insult indeed because nowadays the (western) society is all about who's the best, the fastest, the richest, the nastiest and people are very insecure. I've lived in japan and china several years where you bow to evrybody. The bus-driver, your teacher, the president, your neighbour. Respect nowadays is going down the drain! But one day the world will change, i'm sure....

We can only try, BUT, I am afraid it won't work as long as there is two highways to travel.
I don't care about color, religion, race, or any groups, it shouldn't matter, Lot's of people here put down or single out. I think we all should be treated as individuals. like you I do care how one treats their neighbor, and I will defend when I feel I need to, I can be a little firm, but I try to do it as nice as possible. There is no need to act like a sicko Satan, especially if they want to learn... ask, not be mean.... many ways to word questions.... there's no need for them to act like Satan.... yahoo should organize better.
There I said my peace... I wasn't mean was I, AND THAT'S the only one I dislike is Satan.
God bless us all, because regrets feel like a car crash headed down the wrong road, when we realize we were on the wrong road.... and it's never to late to change lanes to make that U turn to the Highway to Heaven. TY.... God bless us all

I know you have noticed the decline of good manners, courtesy and decency in America these days. It has of course spilled over onto the internet. Then add anonymity and you have a great deal of viciousness and hate anywhere people congregate online. There is an undercurrent of fear and hatred running through American society these days.
These people don't want to convert anyone, they want to unleash pent-up rage, hate and fear while being cowardly about it.

I don't think said people insult others here to get their point across.
I do think these people use insults to cover up the fact that they can't get their point across.
If you feel insulted, they are getting their point across, so just ignore them.
It's like the whole terrorism idea.
The terrorists don't have to kill us to ruin our lives and make their point.
They win even if we just think about them with fear, so it's best to simply ignore them and put it in our government's hands.
So it is here, except the Yahoo! Answers staff is the government.

I suppose they can't think of anything intelligent or respectful to say when making an argument. They act like children who don't get their way. When dealing with someone like that, you just have to take the insults in stride.
Blessed be )O(

it makes the receiver to actually get his mind on the topic easier, though it might be a little rude, but it can get your message across faster and to express your anger at his/her ignorance to your topic. to most people, they think that it actually makes them look bigger and stronger than the other. You can respect the other but you cannot always expect the other to respect you, thats how people are born to be like. I agree to your point, but thats just how people are and we'll just have to face the facts in front of us and let life go on as usual :)

That was well put!!!
It is okay to disagree. When I disagree with someone I don't post unless I have documentation to prove otherwise. If it is a matter of opinion, I just respect that we are all different.
