The company that manufactuers the device states the best method of checking is by weight however the filter weights approximately 680Kg, they give a limit of 4.75Kg from labeled weight. There should be a more accurate method without exposing the filter to gaseous H2S. Any suggestions are welcome.

I am not sure that there is a good answer to your question that you can apply but possibilities occur to me:

1 Keep track of feedrates and its H2S concentration and calculate the H2S the bed is exposed to allowing a safety margin.

2 If there was a probe inserted into the bed say 80% of the way through the bed and check H2S concentrations at that point.

3 Install a smaller back up filter downstream and test for H2S breakthrough between the filters. Replace both filters when this is detected.

Just a safety note your charcoal will not take all the H2S out if the concentration is too high, The old gas mask used that technique and many people died ,
Good luck
