It doesn't. Our modern civilization would like you to think so because sales and profit are the basis of our economy. Sure you can have nicer material things with the almighty buck, but there is more to survival than digital TV and surround sound. Nature, good friends, and family are not material things. Hard work, community service, and volunteering are not material things.
We've let ourselves be caught up in the money - power game and forget that money, power, and material possessions all are transient things...here today and gone tomorrow... leaving an empty space to fill with more material things, etc. It's a vicious cycle.
When we involve ourselves with community service, friends, and family... there is no hole and those things last and fill up a lifetime.
As far at the money game goes, it's like Tic Tac Toe, the only way to win is not to play the game. Do want you need to survive, and let the rest go.

Everything is not about money, which is neutral. People use money for either good or bad things, and greed is a bad thing. Society uses money to buy and to have structure in work, but what matters most, is your soul .. your spirit ... your faith. Don't let your mind focus on money, but on God and what He says is important. Your treasures are in heaven, not here.

There are billions of precious things we can get without money:billions of neurons in our brains, billions of atoms of hydrogene and oxygene in the air, billions of words of wisdom in the mouths of our compatriots, billions of positive thoughts flowing through the universe, ...and it may take me billions of years to tell you about these priceless things.
With all the money on earth we will be able to buy a limited number of things, with our wisdom we can own completely free our soul, which is the 'greater universe'.
