They would have a huge market. Think how great it would be to be able to replace a 20-30 year old V8 with a new hybrid.

because hybrid cars are a complete design that isn't just the engine

think about it, you replace the engine but you don't have a battery bank so your hybrid engine won't run right

you add a battery bank but you don't have braking systems that recover energy and charge the battery so you lose some of the efficiency

your transmission is all wrong because the electric motor in the hybrid car that pushes the drive train does not need a typical transmission and loses its efficiency and advantages if it were connected to one

it might be possible to develop a regular, four cylinder, high efficient low power engine that could be a drop in replacement for a big v8 but i suspect the market would be small

It would be a lot of engineering effort to feed a rather small market. Just bought a hybrid, and the modifications to fit its powerplant and instrumentation into an existing auto would cost far more than the car would be worth. The engine would be the wrong shape and size, one would have to find a place to put the battery, and re-design the instrumentation. Just installing new stuff in the instrument panel would be horrendously expensive.

Enginerd has is correct. The hybrid designs make a great many changes to the basic car.

I don't think it would pay of- people who have those old trucks usually either won't have the money for a new hybrid engine, or just won't be willing to buy one.

nothing is that EASY. It's not just the engine, it's the fuel system, exhaust, radiator, electronics, vibration control, handling(s a result of the weight shift and change torque), transmission etc, etc,.... not like hot wheels..

Easier to start over

Ya' don't know much about cars and how things work, do you?

The three previous answers summed it up well.
