Definition Pets: Living animals kept in the custody of human control within a confined space for purposes of human pleasure, viewing and companionship. The animal is totally dependent on the human for habitat conditions and subsistence. The human may domesticate or train the animal. The animal often looses instincts to live in the wild. Often this animal will not have a mate and will not propagate. In the case of tropical fish for example the conditions for mating in an aquarium may not be suitable even though both sexes are present. Many hobbyists may control the environment for the pets to propagate.
Pets are useful. Cats are natural predators and will keep populations of rodents down. Dogs are great for protection and warning of intruders. Some pets live for many years. Dogs live for up to 15 years, cats eight years and parrots will live 30 years or more. People become very attached to their pets and it is a good practice to keep pets for a child's emotional development. The companionship of pets can be calming to the human and there may be many health benefits by reducing stress.
Children who take interest in keeping pets learn responsibility and are challenged to provide a good environment for the pets to live.
Good pets to keep are dogs, cats, hamsters, birds, fish and aquarimum pets, reptiles, insects. In the rural areas larger pets may be kept such as horses, goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, turkeys, and cows. Pets not generally recommended are pigs, monkeys, weasels, otters, ferrets because of the extra care, facilities and risks of keeping them in a home environment.
Rabbits, popular for children, may be kept in a home, but require lots of care and are difficult to keep.
