Regarding skinheads:

If he's getting into the real skinhead scene, that's not as bad as you think. Skinheads are working class folks who listen to ska, reggae, oi!, and (in the US) hardcore music. We wear certain styles and brands of clothing that are practical but look good - polo or button down shirts, jeans, thin braces, steel-toe boots. We believe in loyalty, brotherhood, working hard, playing hard.

Back in the late 60s in England, some mods picked up the styles being brought in by the black, island immigrants they worked and partied with. Mixed together, it became the skinhead look. They shaved their heads for one, to make it harder for lice to spread (a problem on the docks and in the factories) and two, so there wouldn't be anything to grab during a fight.

Real skinheads aren't racist. There are tons of black, Asian, Latino, etc skinheads - Mexico has a particularly large skinhead scene. How could we be racist when the first real skinhead music was reggae?

In the late 70s, nationalistic/racist English groups started encouraging their young followers to pick up a skinhead style, so they could take advantage of skins' rep for being hard fighters. The media picked up on these so-called "nazi skinheads", and now that's the stereotype. Real skinheads chase nazis out of our scene whenever we can.

E:
Have him watch the movie "SLC Punk" starring Mathew Lillard (he plays "Shaggy" in the Scooby Doo Movies)

Punk is okay as it's a phase, eventually you grow out of listening to punk when you realize that bands that know more than 3 cords are much better to listen to...

The skinhead part will evetually lead him to becoming a violent person with twisted ideas as to how life really isn't, the music/lyrics are all the same... Basing your life on hating people is a pathetic way to go in life.

He is your brother - talk to him - if your brother is smart enough to realize he hangs out with retards, but you have to tell him, so he can see that before he gets "trapped" - especially if you two are close...

Just my opinion... hope it helps...

It sorta depends, partially on age. To me it sounds like he's in his early teens, or around there, in which case, he's experimenting, and you should let him because he's trying to find out who he is. He may decide in the end punk isn't the thing for him, but if he does, you should let him be himself. The stereotype that punks go around getting drunk and into trouble only applies for some people, so chances are it's just a style and a music form to him. Then again, if you see that he's getting himself into trouble, you might just wanna talk to him about it. I'm big on the whole let people be themselves, even if that involves them making what you think are mistakes thing, so I wouldn't go beyond talking to him about it, and that only if it gets too extreme for you to do nothing.

E. Embrace this lifestyle. Love your brother. Offer your advice, but let him grow up and figure it out. 3 years from now the both of you will probably look at these days and laugh. It's a faze- we all go through fazes in our lives. He'll grow out of it. Support him!

There's nothing wrong being associated with these youth subcultures. Your brother gets very strong feelings of power and feelings of togetherness. It feels good for him. He's in search of his identity. It's his life. As long as he's not hurting anybody, it's up to him.

Respect his decisions and opinions. That way he will respect you and your advice.

Chill out - he's not your problem and will resent you for trying to control his life. Just be there for him if he needs you and concentrate on your own problems instead of creating them for both of you. But it's nice that you give a monkeys about his wellbeing.

Just let him do his thing. but if it starts affecting his life in a negative way have a talk with him or set him up with a nice girl she'll change him

You can not control his actions so there is nothing you can do. You do not have to like his friends, as he doesnt have to like yours. I would make sure your parents were aware of the types of people he is making friends with and just leave it alone.

Any reasons why?

Are you jealous of his attention, or lack of it?

We all go through fads in our life.

Would you enjoy it if he started telling you to stop doing the things that make you happy?

i think the only thing to do is ignore it.

truly.

punk has been around so many times, it's NOTHING new. Lots of former punkheads are now bankers and lawyers and vicars.

not kidding -- it's true!
