To a point, but it should not be a cure-all to understanding a race or culture

I think they are. There are always people who don't fit into the category they are stereotyped in, but for the most part they are true. Example... people covered with tattoos are bad.... sure there may be that one guy that just looks really scary but is really a good person, doesn't drink, do drugs, or start fights. But most of the time this is not true....I was taught to stay away from people who look like this for a reason. As with other stereotypes, there are reasons for them.

Stereotypes are like an average. They do not apply to everyone and should not be applied to any individual, that is discrimination.

The stereotypical geek likes computers games, but not all geeks like computers games. To say that all geeks like computer games is both false and discriminatory.

Don't let stereotypes be confused with profiling. Stereotypes are often amusing or funny or the basis of comedy. Profiling is using ethnic or racial averages to predict the possible outcome of a series of events. Profiling is a tool, and like most other tools can be easily misused. There is no inherent evil in the tool, only the ones that use it. Every time you use it, you take the chance of mis-using it.

Majority of the times it is not true. No one wants to be pre-judged. So don't let stereotypes get in the way of you having good ppl come into your life.

Well, I think all stereotypes have basis in fact. But stereotypes are usually pretty exagerated and of course there are exceptions to every rule.
