First of all...don't give in! Your cat is most likely overweight (judging by the fact he's 16 pounds) and you will be killing him by allowing him to get what he wants. If you can't feel his ribs through only a VERY thin layer of fat or he doesn't have a visible waistline, he is overweight. Overweight cats develop many health problems and lose the ability to groom themselves. You should get him in for a checkup to make sure he doesn't have a health condition contributing to or caused by his weight/hunger. Don't feed him table scraps or any kind of human food. Feed him only canned food, or a low calorie dry food along with canned food. Make sure he's on a good quality food (nothing with colored pieces...they're mostly sugar). I recommend foods like Hills, Iams, Eukanuba, etc. Higher quality foods have less filler so he won't be hungry as quickly. His total food intake should be equal to the feeding recommendations for his ideal weight. Split up the daily food total over 2-3 meals and give him a FEW treats throughout the day if he persists (3-4 max). Many vets carry low calorie treats as well as low calorie food. He may not like being on a diet, but he will get used to it. He needs to know that you control the food, not him! Pick up a book about cat behavior or talk to a behaviorist that specializes in cats...they can give you some advice about stopping the attacks.

I would take him to the vet to make sure that he has no parasites or anything else wrong with him medically. And since he is weighing 16 pounds he must be a very big kitty.
Here is most likely your problem. He has learned that he can get food from people as long as he begs. And if he doesn't get his way he throws a fit until you give it too him like a child.
Solution: Once you know that there is nothing wrong with the cat medically besides being very spoilt get a water bottle that can spray a good hard little stream. Stop feeding him off the table and start feeding what he should be eating once or twice a day feedings. When he comes to you or one of your family members begging for food, the minute he starts doing this, spray him right in the face and tell him "NO!".
After a while, it might take a few weeks for him to adjust to his new feeding habit-he will get the idea and stop his behavior. It is time for you to make a stand and quit being pussycat whooped! You rule the kitty not the other way around.

You should switch your cat to premium cat food that has no by-products in it. If your cat gets all of the required nutrience it needs it might stop overeatting. The premium food is a little more expensive than the cheap brands, but you feed the cat less. About 1/2 cup a day depending on the cat's weight. Also the premium food will help keep kitty healthy so you will avoid some vet bills as the cat gets older. The cats fur will be a lot softer and it'll be more healthy.

I think pacifia1977's advice is right on target. My cat is eleven years old. Three years ago I moved into an apartment and my cat had to become a completely indoor dweller. I was afraid she would become overweight without all the running around she was accustomed to doing. On her next vet visit I had her weighed and now I feed her the recommended amount of a premium cat food ONCE A DAY. She yelled at first but quickly got the idea. Of course she gets plenty of love AND fresh cool water. Now she rarely finishes her portion of food each day and she hasn't gained any weight.
PS: The premium cat foods leave fewer "bonuses" in the cat box!
Good luck!

Cats are quick learners, and if he has learned that people will give into him when he begs for food, he will keep demanding it from you all. He probably is not hungry, he just thinks he is! I would have the vet check him out and make sure there are no medical issues affecting him, then put him on a diet. I would not cut the food back too quickly, but gradually lessen the amount he gets over time, to avoid liver problems. He is way too overweight, and it is unhealthy for him to eat like that.

Was this cat ever a stray? Some times if they have ever lived on the streets they get the idea that they have to eat all the food they see because who knows when there Will ever be any more.
You will have to harden your heart. Give him a measured amount of food and that's it. Everybody will have to get on board with the plan. It will do no good if one of you is a soft touch.
when he cries for food, play with him instead. Tell him he is loved, he just can't be fat.
Take him to the vet first to make sure something isn't wrong with him. Could he be diabetic? Or some other cat metabolic problem? If he is diabetic you will have to start giving him shots. Good luck with that.
