I want to edit pictures so that I can use it as an animation to make a home dvd of our vacation. Say example I want to start with a map of a picture and edit it so that it shows where we travelled in animation (eg a blue line moving up the map). And so that pictures move around and that I can animate and put things on. Is there a free product on the market? If not what can I use to do that?
I also want to cut certain parts of mp3's so I can use it on the home video! Is there any free programs available to do that?

You can usse Adobe Photoshop to create animations. If you want to add music and create a slideshow to view it on your DVD player, you can use Ahead Nero to create a presentation and write it on a CD/DVD directly.
