Some moms do feel thirsty when nursing, especially early on. Keep a bottle of water near the chair where you usually nurse or take the time to get a glass before you sit down.

When my first daughter was born, I felt very thirsty every time she started to nurse. I learned to keep a glass of water handy so that I could have something to drink while I nursed her. Eventually, it passed, and that didn't happen with my second daughter.
Never heard of the coughing, though... sorry!

I have nursed three children and never felt thirsty as a result of nursing them.
Your being thirsty & coughing could be a result of your being dehydrated, drink plenty of water, juice or soymilk.
Keeping hydrated will help with your breastmilk supply.

Any time the body is thirsty it has already reached the point of dehydration. Your body uses lots of water to produce milk so you HAVE to be conscientious about drinking LOTS of water.... lots more than you normally would.
ALWAYS have a large jug with you and drink up!
