I hope for a better world. I have faith in my friends. That in no way means I believe in a God. Belief is not an act of will! Belief is what happens *after* you are convinced of something, not before. Speculation is what happens before. As for 'things unseen'; I certainly believe in the air, in ultraviolet light, in radio, and atoms, etc. But then, I have specific and repeatable evidence for each. What *evidence* do you have for a God? If all you do is point to the world around you, you have shown no evidence other than that the *world* exists.

I think there's some truth to what you've said here. A leap of faith is actually two separate leaps, and we atheists have made the more difficult of the two. The two "leaps" are
- The ability to accept the fact that there is no evidence for the existence of god.
- The ability to believe in god despite the lack of evidence.
Atheists have, in general, made that first leap. Ironically, the world is full of believers who have not. Take a look at all of the believers here who insist that there is some kind of evidence (or proof) for god's existence, or who claim that it is "foolish" not to believe. Not a one of them has faith the size of a mustard seed, and instead like doubting Thomas they insist on evidence. Sure, they manage to believe in god, but that's the easy part of a leap of faith.
I do not believe in any gods, but I agree with you that there is within me the ability to become a believer again, based in faith. I'm an atheist, but I am far closer to deep faith-based belief in god than almost any Christian.
I suggest that you rephrase this question, and post it again, this time aimed at the Christians. They have a lot more work to do than do the atheists.

"To believe in God is an act of the will" - ok, with you so far.
"It is the substance of things hoped for" - and you've lost me there. The next phrase, "evidence of things unseen", makes even less sense.
Of course Atheists are capable of faith. Human beings are capable of believing things. This is not news. Human beings are also capable of choosing what they will believe and will not believe. If I choose to, I can believe that the sun will not rise this morning, I can have faith that it will not, I can tell others to have faith that it will not. I may be wrong, but I can believe whatever I want, just like you.

Another bible bashing God botherer abusing the system....this is not a question.
As an Athiest, no I don't have any faith, their is as much credibility in believing in the Christian God as there is in still having faith in Odin the Norse God, or Osiris the Egyptian God. I have to laugh at how religious people are more than happy to accept that their God or prophet is the real deal, but is just as quick to dismiss everyone elses God, as I can dismiss all Gods.
The sooner you accept that once you're dead, that is it, you don't come around again, you don't go to some after-life, you rot in the ground, then you can start living your life to the full, as this is all you get. Don't excuse your small existance on the myth that you will be rewarded for being small and insignificant, because you will have wasted the one life you have for no reason.

To most people the term 'God is just a word. Ask people what God is or looks like they don't have a clue.
Relgious people are always trying to justify their so called faith by saying 'God said this'.
How do you know? Did he/she or it, speak to you?
Please don't start quoting the Bible it is so full of errors and contradictions that it's not worth the paper it's printed on. Unfortunately most Bible readers only remember the bits that suit them.
The term 'faith' is just an excuse not to question what you think you believe because deep inside you know its all rubbish.
Do yourself a favour and start thinking for yourself and get rid of the brainwashing.

Yes, but God not existing, it's a touch difficult for him to give us a measure of faith, isn't it?
You want proof for God not existing?
I'll start off by describing the Christian God whom you so obviously believe in. (as I percieve him)
1.Omnipotent (all powerful) 2. Omniscient (all knowing)
3. Omnipresent (everywhere) 4. Omnibenevolent (all loving)
1. If he is all powerful, can he create a a stone too heavy for him to lift?
2. If he knows everything, does he know how to do the above? Why did he bother testing Adam and Eve with the fruit if he already knew the snake was going to corrupt them?
3. If he is all-loving, why allow bad things in the world, assuming that he is all powerful? Maybe so we can fully appreciate the good things, but cancer? the Holocaust?
4. Omnipresence can neither be proven nor disproven, but an omnipresent being with no power or anything else is slightly pointless, and totally irrelevant to our lives.
Also: If Jesus died on the cross which redeems everyone, why do we need to bother with behaving well? I mean, he redeems our sins etc etc etc.
Why have we not had any prophets etc for 2000 years?
And so on and so on and so on. I can't be bothered to explain further why I don't believe in God, I'd rather go eat my lunch.

yeah, faith is the act to believe in something without any physical proof so yeah we are told and believe that the universe is expanding i know this is true because im told it and told why but i havnt actually been shown red shift so for me believing the universe is expanding is the act of faith.

Do you believe in Garnak? No you have no idea what I'm talking about!!
But it doesn't mean that you couldn't learn the fundamentals of Garnak?
You know his likes and dislikes what he does or doesn't do.
Same thing.
It's also saying do you believe in the boogie man...no, but you still look under the bed...maybe not now.
Yes we have the ability to believe in a God, but there is no proof of one.

Yet more evidence that Christians can only spout unsubstanciated sh!te.
Of course atheists have faith. Faith in themselves, in facts and in evidence.
If you choose to believe what you're told to believe, doesn't that just show how naive you are?

But you need to believe in the existance of that God in order to entertain the idea that he has dealt us all a *measure of faith*...vicious cycle really.
