IS your hair Caucasian? if so... straightener has the same chemicals as a perm so it can damage your hair like a perm can but you can get a little more breakage from combing the straightener through the hair. If you decide to straighten it ask the stylist if she has one she doesn't have to comb thru. I know alot of the stylist just use a perm and add flour to make it thick. It works ok but you do run the risk of a little more damage. I like Rusk straighteners they work really well and you don't comb the hair you kinda put it on like color and I don't seem to notice the breakage or stretching of the hair. Good Luck !!
Don't be afraid to ask what she or he plans to do before you get it done. Let her or him know you have done your homework on this, it will make you better prepared to make a better decision.

I wouldn't do it. Once you do it, you can't go back. Whatever your hair type is, I think natural looks better if you tame it, you know? Don't do it. It's a waste. And it damages your hair terribly. It's like straightening your hair for 10 years and not conditioning it. It's not healthy for your hair.

There is a chance you may not get it to curl again. Accept your curls and waves. It's not easy. It took me awhile to accept mine. But if you find the right products then you can learn to love your curls and waves. Also check out naturally curly.com for support. There are many girls out there that would kill for what you have.
