It won't hold. The paint will come right off of the tiles due to the glazing of the tiles. There's nothing for the paint to adhere reliably to. Scratches will appear constantly and it just won't look or wear good at all.

Actually there are companies out there who refinish tile. One company we have here in San Antonio is called Refinish. Not sure if it is a national outfit or not.
Apartments and some home investors use these services all the time. The pro is you can update or cover up some really bad tile. The con is you also cover up grout lines and so it doesn't look completely right. However, it is obviously cheaper than replacing the tiles.
As far as you yourself doing it, I wouldn't recommend it. Paint probably won't adhere to tile very good or for very long.

My son remodels old houses for a living and he has painted a lot of old tile bathrooms to make the colors look more modern. After he uses paint that is made for ceramics, he uses a feather duster to give it a splash of a contrasting color. Looks really good. He did his own house.
