Assuming you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, to get back into the U.S. after visiting Canada, you will need proof of U.S. citizenship. This can take the form of a passport, or a birth certificate + photo ID. After the beginning of next year, a passport will be required.

YES, you need an original birth certificate and a photo ID. Passports will not be needed until December 31, 2007.

*****BE CAREFUL!*****

My friends and I drove 3 hours to 1000Islands Ontario (we are canadian) and wanted to go to Boldt Castle (which is American Soil) We were NOT allowed to use anything other than passports to get on the ferry and of course we didn't have them!!! ARG!! We didn't think we'd need them to go to an Island!! Like terrorists want to bomb a 200 year old castle! *rants*

So we DROVE 30 minutes across the border - used our medicare cards to get into the States and we went on a ferry from the American side. So it is best to call ahead and talk to someone that works there - cause our whole trip was ALMOST ruined cause we didn't read the "fine print" on the website

From the AAA website:

"Valid government issued photo identification and evidence of U.S. citizenship are needed when entering Canada from the United States. Please be aware that Canada may exclude persons who have a criminal conviction record, including driving while intoxicated (DWI) or under the influence (DUI). For further information, see the State Department Consular Information Sheet at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html or the Travel Canada website at http://www.travelcanada.ca/travelcanada/app/en/us/travelArticle.do?catId=51 for a more complete explanation of laws applicable to U.S. nationals entering Canada. "

The "evidence of US Citizenship" makes me think you are going to need your birth certificate.

UPDATE: http://www.meetings.canada.travel/ctc/mcit/things-to-know3.jsp?cat=1245 says:

"Identification at the Border - U.S. Citizens

Although a passport is the ideal identification, at this time, you do not require a passport or visa to enter Canada. Just make sure you carry identification to establish your citizenship such as a Birth Certificate and least one ID card with photo. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen, you should carry this certificate. Permanent residents of the U.S.A. must bring their "Green Card". "
