Islam is the religion, Muslims are the followers.
Like Christianity is the religion, Christians are the followers.
But I think you real question is why do you see a different between what the religion teachs and what the people do?
Unfortunately, that happens in every religion. Anyone can decide to call themselves a Muslim, a Christian, a Catholic, a Baptist, a Buddist, an atheist, or anything else and then do "whatever" in the name of the religion, and there is not much the religion can do about it. The religion - and God - get the blame for it, when the fault lies with the individual.
Hitler claimed to be a Christian, but I don't know of a single (real) Christian group that supports the things he did. Stalin was an atheist, but I don't know a single (sane) atheist that approves of his slaughter of 17 million people. Julius Caesar was a worshipper of the Roman gods. Should they be blamed for all the waqrs, deaths and crucifixions that happened under his reign? Sometimes it is hard to separate the religion from the acts of its followers.
I am not a Muslim, but I have taken the time to examine the religion. There are good things and not so good things about it. And like any religion it is going to be "adjusted" by its followers to meet their own personal bias. There are verses in the Koran that speaks of peace and coorperation between the differrent "people of the book". Those Muslims who want peace can support their views. There are verses that speak of hatred and jihad. Those Muslims who want war can support their views. All they have to do is ignore the parts they don't want to believe.
It is no different from the Bible, where you can find a verse somewhere to take out of context to prove anything you want. And so the followers of any religion can usually find a way to make it teach anything they want - even when it totally contradicts everything the religion actually stand for. And in the end, it is usually God, not the person, who gets the blame for it.
Nobody ever said being God was easy.

that's a real nice question. well, i think u r right somehow as there are no big relations between Muslims and Islam, but this is not surprising for anybody, as it is the same also in Christianity it has nothing to do with those ppl screwing up every possible thing, so we can say humans are going against all the rules everywhere, but if u r talking about the terrorists, let me explain something to u, when u do feel like u have been cheated by everybody on earth and that u have been mistreated from everybody, what do u think u will do? some will get high, and still be called Muslims, some will run away and some will choose to get lost but not alone.
am not at all with them, am completely against valiance, but if u want to solve a problem u should first understand it.
and this doesn't apply only for Muslims, it's for all terrorists, all those who think that terrorists are only Muslims, just need some knowledge.
read some and think some and u will find out.

the media is in the hands of the westerners who are afraid of Islam. The media is continuously broadcasting and printing information against Islam. They either provide misinformation about Islam, misquote Islam or project a point out of proportion, if any.
b. When any bomb blasts take place anywhere, the first people to be accused without proof are invariably the Muslims. This appears as headlines in the news. Later, when they find that non-Muslims were responsible, it appears as an insignificant news' item.
c. If a 50 year old Muslim marries a 15 year old girl after taking her permission, it appears on the front page but when a 50 year old non-Muslim rapes a 6 year old girl, it may appear in the news in the inside pages as ‘Newsbriefs'. Everyday in America on an average 2,713 cases of rape take place but it doesn't appear in the news, since it has become a way of life for the Americans.
2. Black sheep in every community:
I am aware that there are some Muslims who are dishonest, unreliable, who cheat, etc. but the media projects this as though only Muslims are involved in such activities. There are black sheep in every community. I know Muslims who are alcoholics and who can drink most of the non-Muslims under the table.
3. Muslims best as a whole:
Inspite of all the black sheep in the Muslim community, Muslims taken on the whole, yet form the best community in the world. We are the biggest community of tee-totallers as a whole, i.e. those who don't imbibe alcohol. Collectively, we are a community which gives the maximum charity in the world. There is not a single person in the world who can even show a candle to the Muslims where modesty is concerned; where sobriety is concerned; where human values and ethics are concerned.
4. Don't judge a car by its driver:
If you want to judge how good is the latest model of the "Mercedes" car and a person who does not know how to drive sits at the steering wheel and bangs up the car, who will you blame? The car or the driver? But naturally, the driver. To analyze how good the car is, a person should not look at the driver but see the ability and features of the car. How fast is it, what is its average fuel consumption, what are the safety measures, etc. Even if I agree for the sake of argument that the Muslims are bad, we can't judge Islam by its followers? If you want to judge how good Islam is then judge it according to its authentic sources, i.e. the Glorious Qur'an and the Sahih Hadith.
5. Judge Islam by its best follower i.e. Prophet Mohammed (pbuh):
If you practically want to check how good a car is put an expert driver behind the steering wheel. Similarly the best and the most exemplary follower of Islam by whom you can check how good Islam is, is the last and final messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Besides Muslims, there are several honest and unbiased non-Muslim historians who have acclaimed that prophet Muhammad was the best human being. According to Michael H. Hart who wrote the book, ‘The Hundred Most Influential Men in History', the topmost position, i.e. the number one position goes to the beloved prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh). There are several such examples of non-Muslims paying great tributes to the prophet, like Thomas Carlyle, La-Martine, etc.

Islam is a religion and Muslim is a generic term for the people from the Middle East. There are actually a lot of Muslims that are actually Christians. Islam as a religion is very similar to Christianity and Judaism, but there are certain parts of the Koran that when studied by fundamentalist are believe to suggest that murder and terrorism are suggested by the writings. In truth, it said to be an honor to die for your country and your God and that those that do will be rewarded in the afterlife.

The words Islam and Muslim are a fairly modern invention whereby people belonging to the faith have invented in order to distinguish themselves from the rest of the religions.
Notably, none of the main religious movements in the world have made an attempt to name themselves when they originated. Christians were not ordered to call themselves Christians back in the day, and neither were Jews.
Similarly, when the Quran was revealed there was no specific word used to name or separate those who believed in it apart from: believers.
However the Quran also mentions that a person who believes in the Oneness of the Creator should be a person of faith *or as it is put in arabic: mumin* i.e. a believer, with an extra characteristic: a submitter to Gods will i.e. *muslim* in arabic.
As a believer in the Last Message of God I must say that I as with the 1.3 billion people on earth who are called Muslims, believe in One God who has no partners, no sons, no incarnates, because He is the Ultimate power and is the Source from which everything has originated. And in His power, He alone has the right to be worshipped.
As for your question about why Muslims do not act the way they preach, all I can say is, there are over 1 billion people who believe in the Last message of God. If their religious teachings had taught these people to fight and kill, dont you think we would have had a World War 3 going on by now? or even several ones?
I suggest you read up on the information available for you and do not judge the faith or an entire group of people based on the actions of a handful of people.

Islam is a religion founded by Prophet Mohammad.
Muslim are those who practise Islam or who hold Muslim/Arabic names.
Now coming to terrorism, always remember the terrorists do not follow the same what they are supposed to do.It is their own fault. As human being they are mean.
And calling terrorist,is always relative.Hitler was hero in Germany but he was a terror to Jews.US see Cuba as foe,but Castro is known as fighter.British used to call Indian Freedom Fighters as terrorist, but those fighters were well accepted by their own country men.
And one thing ,terrorism has nothing to do with Religion. It is some way for a group of people to rebel.

let's not be silly and generalize...
we all know that not all muslims practice hatred and terrorism... this terrorist groups is a very small portion compared to the whole islamic population...
try to watch scenes of hajj or scenes of muslims during ramadan in mekkah praying and see how simple and peaceful they are...
islam encourages to fight back who fights islams and muslims like any other religion or country would do... but some ppl with specific agendas mixed other issues with religion and the result was the so called terrorism which is now attributed to islam as a whole..
also, someone might see a group as terrorist while they r not, they r fighting back in their own way..just like hamas or huzb allah... they fight back the most terrorist state israel.. and try to protect themselves from israel... ppl with some interest with israel will call the other two parties two terrorists..
this brings a good question??? how do u define terrorism? who is terrorist?? is invading others' countries terrorism?? is fighting back -regardless of the way- terrorism?? and most importantly who has the right to define it and call any group terrorists?? G Bush???

Actually, there was a show on National Public Radio this morning and this guy was saying that Mohammed is celebrated for being a warrior and the koran does say that it is ok to conduct war in the name of allah.
In addition, this guy claimed that Islam is a very controlling religion that has rules in how you conduct most every aspect of your life.
How you get married
How you treat women
What language you speak (must be arabic).
And there are references to spreading over the entire world.
Be afraid of this.....

One simple answer that maybe even you can understand, as you must not have studied on this to learn something.
People who follow Islam are called Muslims. And, there are very few of them who do not follow the religion and use it to promote their own hateful agenda. You have these few people in ALL religions. I can name Christians who are this way.
