It depends on what type of animal. If you want to know smallest, lightest animal with a "backbone", then its the minuscule fish or its called a stout infantfish. Its only 8mm in length.
Smallest mammal/flying animal
If you are looking for smallest flying animal or mammals, then its Bumblebee or Kitti's Hog-nosed Bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai). It lives in Karichanaburi Province, Thailand. Its body is no bigger than a large bumblebee, with a head-and-body length of 1.1-1.3" and a wingspan of 5.1-5.7" It weighs 0.06-0.07 oz.
The Smallest Primate
Pygmy Mouse Lemur (Microcebus myoxinus) is the smallest primate and lives in western Madagascar. It's head-and-body length is measured at 2.4" with a tail length of 5.4" and an average weight of 1.08 oz.
Smallest Amphibian
Frog (Eleutherodactylus limbatus), is the smallest known amphibian, found in Cuba which measures just 0.33-0.47" from snout to vent.
Smallest Spider
Patu Marplesi is the smallest known spider, it is in the family Symphytognathidae from Western Samoa. A male found has an overall length of just 0.017 in.

The smallest animal in the world -also the smallest vertebrate ever found- is a fish called Paedocypris . It's so tiny- about 7.9 mm- that you could fit ten around an American dime with room to spare. They're found in Indonesia in swamps. Unfortunately this habitat is threatened and scientists are rushing to save this species from extinction.
The next smallest animal is a fish as well - The Indo Pacific Goby which is 8 mm long.
The smallest land animals are the Bumble Bee Bat and the Bee Humming bird. Both creatures weigh about 2 grams.
Wannanosaurus is the smallest full grown dinosaur they've found so far.

depends on what you mean by 'animal'. Microbes and bacteria that can't be seen with the naked eye could be considered animals. Or if you mean mammals, then probably some type of mole or shrew. There are also hummingbirds that are smaller then your pinkie finger.
