Because these are controversial subjects and people have emotional reactions to them. They want to know whether the asker is on the same opinion as them or on an opposite one. If the asker has the same opinion as you then you are happily answering, and the chances to get those 10 points are higher too. If it's an opinion different from yours then perhaps you just want to rant at the asker. In either case, these subjects are quite close to the heart. Especially religion. A lot of the times I read these questions because I'm interested in the answers, but I don't answer in many cases.

They spark emotion. Hence quick response whether anger, laughter, or both. Immigration is a hot button issue right now. Education should be as should other less emotion provoking issues. I suggest tieing them together in question form. Such as addressing the issue of school districts over run by Illegal Immigrants thus lowering the GPA and expectations of all students who attend in those area's.

Well, the race card is an easy way to get people's blood 'up', so that's why it's used, as an inflammatory tool to agitate. If I can get you mad at me by saying something derogatory about your ethnicity, get you all riled up, I can then get you to say/do something really stupid, because people don't think clearly when they're angry. It's an argument tactic, it's called race-baiting. If it didn't work, they wouldn't use it...

My visceral reaction to a racist question happens to be negative.
