I'm in hysterical laughter here... are there really countries in the world where it's ILLEGAL to say things like that?
Or do people just think Australia is still some kind of backward, insane cesspool of nincompoops?
No, it's not illegal to say "I don't speak English" in Australia.

I don't think so. Just because it is the official language does not mean everyone must know how to speak it. Unless the rules are different in Australia...

No it is not illegal. But australians DO NOT speak English they speak Australian.
30-40 English words, a fuc**, a shi**, a bullsh**, a cun**, a mate, a fuc**en, a bloody and finally the combination of all these words comes the Australian language.
i.e. The bloody fu*ken fu**er's Fu**ked.( translation: it is broken and needs repear).
There are still many wogs who live in Australia for 40 years and haven't learn more than these 40-50 words and they have no problem to communicate.:)

Maybe you mean "Is it illegal to say, "Yo no hablo inglés".
No, it just means that you can't go to court and demand a language translator at government expense.
