from my point of view, this can be answered by posing a simple question: are there any false-positives? I mean, did it happen (or does it happen regularly) that people are sentenced to death where later on their innoce was prooved?

if the answer to this question is yes, death-penalty should be abolished.

No, it should not be abolished but in fact changed back to the previous hangings on public square. Lethal injection is too pleasant for the beasts that commit hideous crimes. Also it should be in the view of the public so that people can see what the consequences are for committing such acts. Another responder stated that the death penalty has not reduced crime. This may be somewhat true but have you ever noticed that these penalties are carried out in the wee hours of the morning with only a few people present. In most instances they are allowed about 7 different appeals while they are on death row. The liberals that are against capital punishment must have never had anything to happen to a close relative or they would want to be the hangsman themselves. Someone said let them do life in prison instead because that would be harder on them. Wrong!!! I have been working in the corrections field for over 10 years and I know better. Many people out there have relatives in prison. They all get the same sad stories. I need some money sent to me for several different reasons. The food is horrible and I can't eat it, so send some money so I can buy from the canteen. Of course the food isn't what you would find at a 4 star restaurant but it is nutrionally balanced and in many cases better than what our children get in the public school cafeterias. Much of the money you send is used to pay their gambling debts and taking care of their friends. Back to the appeals. Who pays for all those expensive court sessions? We, the taxpayers do. And as far as a deterrent against crime, look at what some of these other countries do. If you are caught stealing, they cut off your hand. I hope this helps.

if i take a while and think i say that the eath penalty over the world should exist, eventhough it sounds unhumane, but an old arabic saying is: who has a way out of a penelty, would do the crime . in other words if u can get rid of the time u'll do the crime.

the death penelty isn't for something minor, but it is for major things, as for murder, or treason, and it isn't for simpler stuff, as shop liffting, or breaking an e ntry.

i know you would be thinking right now, why not give a life-time of prison? economicly the gov. has to pay for the all the people in any prison, security, maintinace, salries, food....etc that ends up in a tax increase.

the person may get away with what he id, he might get a parole ( eventhough some prisoners are sentced not to get a parole but after a while they might give a parole.)
or e ven more he might escape prison and commite the crime again

not trying to be very offend ng but that is one way of looking at it.

Yes. The state already has too much power over us, it should not also have the power to deliberately take a life.

And it's not that I'm overly sympathetic toward the worst criminals. If the investigation was done properly and the trial was fair, then they should go to prison, for a long time -- I have no problem with that.

The ones I feel sorry for are the jurors who have to decide whether to send a person to their death; the judges who have to hand down the death sentence; and especially the prison wardens and guards who have to carry out the execution. Nobody should have to do that kind of work.

No Why would we want to support murders for the rest of their lives. I think the death penalty should be in all states. It will stop over crowding in the now over crowed prisons. If they can do the crime then they need to pay.

No, but it should be rarely used. I support it ONLY for cases where there is absolutely no doubt about guilt, and everybody thinks the killer is so deranged that executing him would be the merciful option.

By "no doubt", I mean forensic evidence and eye witnesses who already knew the defendant before the crime and saw the crime occur, all with no other possible interpretation. This would probably lower the number of executions to 5-10 per year.

Yes I sure do. I live in Australia & we dont have that here. I think its worse for a person to have to spend the rest of their life in a 4x4 cell each & every day remembering why they are there as opposed to getting the easy option of death. I know alot of people will disagree with me, but thats only my opinion.
My brother is in prison for killing someone & he is paying for it as he should. There are circumstances like that of my brothers where a jury cannot proove beyond reasonable doubt that a sober/sain person in their right mind would respond in the same manner.
As I said, only my opinion.

death penalty is a sentence of the middle ages. And they have proven that it doesn't lower crime rates but has the opposite effect.
So Yes abolish it!!

I think the death penalty verdict should be enforced and expidited, but the sentence should be given out less often.

Yeh def!!! It's way worse in prison than it is to die. Think bout it... In prison they will get beaten up and treated inhumanely. Any ways, some people want to die after commiting a crime so if we murder them, not only are we sinking to their level but also we are giving them what they want. Is that right?

Some people may be framed anyway and then look what happened. You killed an innocent person.
