very interesting question: could be multiple things going on here, just a stererotype, could be poor blacks, ruder blacks, maybe how they were treated at their meal, maybe it is not true at all, but you know how things pass around... who knows.... my husband and i always tip (we are black).... at least 15% for the worst service (we have a tip calculator).... and it has to be very very bad to get that..... and we are not rich ppl (not poor.... student salaries really).... but we think if we were served we should pay even if they service was crappy, its the way we were raised (a lot of manners).... and if the service if good we tip very well.... and we thank the server very well and recommend them to their manager..... I just think it may be the person themselves... because i know people who are not black that put no tip down after they eat, and other who put large sums down..... my opinion is that it is a personal thing.... not a racial thing...

In my experience as a server the worst tips (or no tips) came from black people, who were ruder and more demanding, the "after church" people, who were also more demanding. The elderly, the families with 2 or more kids, who made the biggest mess, let the kids run wild, the 16-20 year olds, who were really rude and basically don't know how to act in public, 2 or more women generally don't tip female servers very well (also rude and demanding) I could go on and on. I never pre-judged a table, tried to approach each one with a blank slate. But the stereotypes of each group are there for a reason, past experiences.
I think everyone should have to wait tables, do some job in the service industry at some point in their life, see how it feels to have to kiss a**, trying to earn a living, see how it feels to work while person after person is rude and nasty to you.

I haven't ever heard of that stereotype. When I was a teen working as waitress, I was always told to look at a person's shoes. The person with the best shoes was supposed to be the best tipper. That wasn't always true either.

Stereotypes are really a joke. You can put people in categories. Everybody is a unique individual. Hopefully, one day we can all except that as a fact.

No, the stereotypes are no longer authentic. it rather is the section you have been in. i'm black and that i'm no longer impolite, i've got on no account stolen something from all and sundry in my entire existence (no longer even grapes from a food market) and that i continually pass away a minimum 15% tip, frequently 20%. My kin are a similar and that i've got countless black pals who're in actuality like me. You stated your self "maximum (no longer all)" in one particular section and regarded that the place you grew up you on no account observed it. does not that inform you that the stereotypes are no longer authentic?

They do tip, but, honestly as a server they tip poorly in a majority .... not all though.
Lesson learned to all who disagree .... nowadays, a decent tip is about 18%-20% of the meal cost .... not the retarded $2-$4 they always leave on $60 checks.
Don't think that a server/waiter makes minimum wage plus tips .... not true .... they make $2.13 an hour plus tips ... and the whole check that comes at the end of the pay period is mostly always VOID, because, everything goes to paying taxes.
But, rest assure ... we will always make a living due to good service, decent/good tippers and the fact that most people feel embarrased to be sh*tty tippers.

I think that it is true more times than not. As a server I have noticed that, of all my sh*tty tips, the majority of them have been from either out of towners or a minority. I use the term minority loosly because where I live I'm the minority. I don't know if it's how people were raised up or if they think we get more than $2.13 an hour to serve them, but more times than not I end up getting a $4 or 5 tip from my "Black tables" whether the bill is $20 or $200. Its aggrevating. I try to treat each table fairly, give them all a chance, but they bring the stereotype upon themselves by being the shitty tippers.

it's not a stereotype, it's a documented trend, written about by researchers in restaurant and fine dining magazines.
and as a server for many years, I can tell you from experience as well that a higher percentage than average of African Americans tip much less than other groups.
to put it in concrete terms, if i serve 8 parties of black people in a night, 4 of the parties will tip between 5 and 8%. As opposed to the remaining 4 parties who will tip 12 to 15%. Perhaps one of the parties will tip 20% or more.
compared to all other customers, of whom perhaps 1 party of 15 will tip that poorly.
notably, Europeans tend to tip less as well.
i'm sure it's just a knowledge deficit. i think if they knew how much other people were tipping, they would tip better.
i've said for years that i wish Oprah would do a show or 2 about this subject.

It's true amongst the lower income people who cant grasp the whole concept of tipping but Jews hate to tip big time as well as Europeans who are used to having the tip already added to the check

I have heard it but I know it's not completly true because my girlfriend makes sure that the waitress or waiter gets their 15% tip every time, I wouldn't really worry about it, there are always certain amount of a*sholes in the world, just need to learn to ignore them is all

Ugh..My family tips all the time, I would surely appreciate it if you wouldn't post stupid questions dealing with stereotypes around, it makes my race and other races look bad, your only coughing up some more hatred towards black people..Shame, and to even think that this has absolutely nothing to do with immigration in the first place.
