I believe that the most extravagantly adorned place Jesus would choose to fellowship would be in your hearts. We were created to worship and fellowship with God and he loved us so much that Jesus died as a sacrifice for our lives, our souls.
Heaven will be a wonderful place, gold roads, jewel gates and crystal seas, but they will not hold a candle to being in the presence of God. The light of the place will come from Jesus and we will be with him for ever and ever.
I think Jesus chose to be where his flock was when he was on earth, he chose to be with those who needed to hear. Now he has chosen us to speak to those who need to hear about his Word. We should be about his business where his lost children are.
If you look to the largest churches in America; many of them are functional, not pretty, but God can use any place where people seek his will and not their own. You question would depend on what the motives where of those people within.
The Church is not the building, but the people, the place of worship is the heart and soul not the pews and sanctuaries.

If Jesus were to be present, it would seem that he would not approve of the extravagant adornments of places of worship, not in themselves but because the money has not been used for more philanthropic uses such as feeding the disadvantaged.

I think it'd depend. Was the church decorated to show the wealth of the people within? Or was it decorated to show the people's love of God? Where did the congregation's heart lie, when it came to doing so?
Or, if it was by the pastor's choice... was it to show his wealth? To entertain the congregation? His love for God? Where did his heart lie when he did so?
To hastily say, "No, give it to the poor" would be akin to Judas' complaint (to which Jesus said, "You'll always have the poor, but won't always have Me"), however, to hastily say, "It's good to use extravagance" would be akin to the rich man who loved his wealth, but wanted eternal life. So, instead of speaking in haste...
Since Jesus knows all, He knows whether it was done to truly glorify man, or to truly glorify God. Only then would He approve or disapprove.
In the end... God commanded the stuff in the tabernacle and in the temple to be made of gold, to be an earthly reflection of what is in Heaven. When done with the right attitude of the heart... all things are to His glory. ^_^

I believe the temple that He used was well adorned. Look at the description of the temple Solomon built, of which was partly there in Jesus' time.

There are so many beautiful places of worship. I think the money
spent on newer, and bigger places could be better spent
elsewhere.

Let's face it, it's just a work of fiction.
But if he did exist and he came along to have a look, after everything he said in the bible - he would be pretty angry.

I don't think Jesus would have approved of them, no, considering how many were financed.
