There are two things I can think of that might cause a tom to do this: one is the presence of crystals in his urine, which can cause his urinary tract to become inflamed. Males will yowl in pain after urination for this reason. They also tend to urinate more frequently but in smaller amounts.
The other thing is this: even a neutered cat has sex hormones. If there is a female in heat in the vicinity, males, intact or not, will notice it. Three is the age when they are no longer kittens, but have reached full physiological maturity, so right now is when you would notice it.
Watch his paterrns carefully. If he is cryign after using the litterbox, take him to the vet for a urinalysis and check-up. If it is a female in heat, it may subside withihn a week unless there are more than one. In that case it may be curbed by negative reinforcement with a water-bottle. Hiss at him and spray him every time he does it!
Of course, it goes without saying that he needs a thorough internal checkup on the next routine visit to the vet, to make sure there are not any internal masses or anything. Cats do not meow to communicate with each other- it is to tell us something. my 9 year old male yowls when he is frustrated because I will not let him outside, and is always worse when there females in heat in the area.
Good luck!

My suggestion would be to get him in for a checkup. There are conditions that would make him painful that he may not be exhibiting any other symptoms for. Vets are trained for palpating animals to check for problems...even the most devoted pet owners generally can't find the same problems. I also agree with the person who suggested that there is a cat in heat nearby. If there is a certain area of the house he goes to do this, maybe confine him to another area. Hope that helps :)

It is very possible there is a female in heat and he can smell it just because he is fixed doesn't mean he doesn't want to go out on the town or he may just be begging for attention I had one that did the same thing every night I asked the vet what we could do about it because they were keeping us up all night but there isn't really a remedy for constaint talking.

Firstly as you know a male calico is an unusual thing. 2ND I agree with Haunted fox on the Crystallized pee. very painful if left untreated deadly! Our Maine coon used to yowl alot and then died of that, we didn't know he had it till after he died.
Take Mr Calico to a cat specialist vet & ask them to specifically check for that.
Otherwise I don't know he could be restless or horny.

Male calico's are rare (I've never seen one) and not fertile.
Have a vet check him. Could be anything from a bladder infection to behavioral issues to boredom or pain. A full exam is necessary it sounds like. Good luck.

If this behavior just started recently and is quite bothersome I would take him to the vet for a check up. It couldn't hurt anything and it would give you peace of mind and he or she could possibly have some advice for you on how to stop the yowling.

Is he an outdoor cat? Maybe he met a friend he's longing for? Maybe he likes the vibration this new tone makes in his vocal cords or ears? It's not rare for a Calico to be born deaf. Have you ever tried testing him for deafness by clapping your hands behind his head when he wasn't looking? I had a deaf Calico that liked to Meow alot. In any case, you'll have to beak him of that habbit. The only thing I know of is a spray bottle filled with water. Squirt him when he does this and he'll learn to stop it.

I have the same problem with my Bombay. He's been neutered and has never been outside, yet he howls at the door all the time. I hate doing it, but I have to yell out his name and tell him no. It works and he ususlly walks away, only to repeat it the next night. Call out his name loudly and say NO, He will get the picture.
