There is no reason anyone can give you. There is a bunch of possible causes. It sounds to me you are going through tellogen effluvium, however the cause is what you want to find out.
I would surly start with seeing your doctor, and you will find doctors usually wont be very helpful at first. Theres a web site I belong too, I have this too going on... www.herhairlosshelp.com theres a ton of information on it from other women and what they did, or are doing.

As far as alopecia, there are a few forms of it. Lets find out whats going on inside to affect the outside, and by the way your iron would have to be very low, and you hair would be the last of your symptoms.

Good Luck- I know how devastating and scary this is!

it could be a number of reasons why your hair is falling out...
1. have you been pregnant and had a baby, and if so your hormones are wacky this does cause hair falling out, i know it happend to me.
2. it could be the type of shampoo, and if your hormones are wacky, the combo could really cause it to fall out,
3. did you get a perm or coloring in you hair recently
4. have you been seen by the doctor
5. hair comes out due to new hair growing in for the next season, but as much as you say, doesnt sound normal
6. your diet is another reason your hair could be falling out as well, if you are not eating well, your hair isnt getting its nutrients like protein to keep it attached to your head.
7. you should see your doctor

Go and see your doctor, could be alopeshia (not sure how it's spelt) or you could have a thyroid problem.
Coming off the pill or if you have just had a baby can cause hair loss too.
Usually to do with your hormones.

This happens more to me in the summer than winter. I believe its the heat. also too many chemicals used on hair, poor diet, stress..all will cause hair loss.

A million and one reasons and remedies. Call at a dermatologist this moment and abide strictly by his prescription. Good Luck.
