it's because they're thinking or the wrong fish. see people used to pronounce the words herron and herring the same way and so some people started to say herron fish (to deferinciate from herring bird). then that died down, and someone heard about a fish that used to have the word fish after its name, but couldn't remeber which fish. so they just took a stab in the dark at tuna, and for some reason it stuck.

reason canned tuna used to have a fantasy approximately being dolphin and whale. So, we call it tuna fish so human beings understand have been speaking approximately healthful fish and not tuna created from dolphins and seals and different scrumptious yummy little sea critters.
