Ramadan begins (24 September 2006)

Eid Al-Fitr (23 October 2006)

Hajj begins (29 December 2006)

Eid Al-Adha (31 December 2006)

My sister in Dubai said that it is a holiday today and it has something to do with Islam. It is not a national holiday in the Philippines but the moslems may be observing it here. I have yet to hear news about it. The holiday being observed today, however, is in commemoration with the death anniversary of Sen. Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. a.k.a. Ninoy who was assassinated in 1983 during the regime of the deposed President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

The Islamic calender is based on sighting of moon. As new moon appears on different dates in different countries, same Muslim events are celebrated on different dates. The difference can be three to four day. New moon is sighted earlier in the west and lastly in the east. So it is not a holiday for Mairaj in India today. May be it will be tomorrow or day after tomorrow.
