china has unique products when it comes to porcelain, antique, jewelries, ivory, jade, carpets, embroidery, silk, painting and even tea. they are a must because china has a rich culture and uncomparable products. you can see how the chinese paid attention in every thread, paint etc they used. china has a long history when it comes to arts. the skills required on those crafts arent common since it was handed down by the older people to their offsprings,it's a specialty not everyone can have.
well, everything else is made in china so purchase the crafts instead. from clothes, shoes, belts you can buy a lot in china i know but nothing extraordinary unless your buying a chinese tiongsam red pajama for yourself. ;) why not??? it's cute...

The most unique item by far is the silk comforter. They are impossible to find in the U.S. stores and about $300 on internet. I have bought about 50 of them the past 5 years as gifts and every one loves them.
On a good bargaining day, I pay about $55 for a king size (220cm x 240cm) 2.5kg- 3 kg weight. Avoid the lighter weights as you do not save much money and lose alot in comfort. You can also get a custom made duvet for about $15. Just shop the yardage stores, pick out the material and give them 15-20 minutes to sew.. Ditto for pillow cases.
DVD and CD knock offs are totally unreliable and also illegal You risk having them confiscated by China Customs. Jade is another inexpensive item as are any hand crafted pieces of art.
Finally, most medicines are available over the counter. They are about 90% cheaper than U.S. prices and made by the same mfgs. e,g, Merck etc.
Silk shirts, coats, blouses, scarves, ties, etc. are a steal if you are a patient and persistent bargainer. Beware of size labels for they are never correct. You must either measure or try it on. I live in Beijing and buy all my clothes here and learned the hard way.
The new Silk market is a rip off. Go outside the Silk market building, and down the subway stairs to the uinderground market. Few tourists know about this market so the shop owners are much easier to deal with. If you do n ot know the value of the item you want, ask for a price and then offer 10% of that price. Stick to it for as long as they keep begging you to raise it. They will come down rapidly, but never to your price. When negotiations reach an impasse (usually 20-30 minutes) make your final offer. I suggest no more than another 5%. If they refuse, just leave. Usually they will follow you and agree. The main clue that you are close to an acceptable price is when they continue to talk. If they turn their back on you and put away the item, you will know your offer is unrealistic and they do not want to waste their time. I have bought items for 100 RMB where the starting price was 800-1,000RMB and watched another foreigner pay 600RMB for the identical item thinking they got a great deal. Just be patient and persistent. If you do not get your price from one vendor, walk another 40 feet and you will see it again.

pearls are a good buy
But I always say the two best things to buy cannot be taken out of China.....
First is the food.
Second is the massage.
Get a foot or body massage while in China.

Where are you going in China? They have different markets in different cities. They have a lot of good, inexpensive things. For example, in Beijing at the "Silk Market", they sell clothing by brand name designers for really cheap (I think that they get the stuff directly from the factories producing it)... but you have to bargain a lot. For example, they have polo sweaters which you can bargain down to 50yuan (about US$6.50), if you are good at haggling. And those sweaters are really sweet! You can also get brand name watches, handbags, pens, ski jackets, pants, shirts, underwear, even some jewellry.
I saw that other posts recommend pirated DVDs. Very cheap in China.
If you are looking for high-end things to buy and places to go in Shanghai, a friend of mine told me about this awesome guide to the best high-end places: The Best of the Best Shanghai. They have it free in hotels, etc. See url below.
Have a fun trip to China! And enjoy the shopping (anyway, most of the things you buy in the West these days are made in China).

I like the old propaganda stuff. I have a poster teaching rural Chinese how to make home made explosive devices to blow up Soviet paratroopers.
