My son is due to start nursery in a few weeks, the handbook given out by the school says that boys should be familiar with using a urinal, but as i am on my own James has always sat to pee & dabbed himself afterwards.
I know that when he sees the other boys doing it he may be ok, but is there anyway i could help him first, I dont wont the other kids making fun of him.
Philippa.

A tour is needed before school. I would just take your son into a men's bathroom. You can find a small one (so you won't have visitors) at a restaurant or store. Show him the ropes and explain what the urinal is. I appreciate all these people telling you to let him wing it, but as a teacher with lots of single-mother students I have seen the downside of the urinal. I actually had a boy poop in the urinal. His mom had told him it was just another type of potty. Poor guy was really embarrassed.
This will be easy for you and for your son. Just take him on a tour and tell him about the rules. (Don't touch the tablet in the urinal. Only one person pees at a time. Flush when you are done. If you have to poop-use the potty in the stall.) I wouldn't build this into a "you're a big boy now" event, as you probably want him to go in the ladies bathroom with you when you are in public for safety reasons. Good luck!

this is a toddler training urinal. my boys already know how to pee standing up otherwise i would have bought it in a heartbeat. you can only get it over the net at walmart, target and i think toys r us. i've put a link below to the site for the "peter potty". click on the little urinal to the right of the screen just under where it says 'see our new tv spot!' to see a short video. i also put a link to peter potty at walmart.com so you can see how much it is.

I agree with the other answers that if you've got a trusted male who can help show him how "big boys" do it that will help. I would also suggest calling his school and talking to the director or teacher. Explain the situation and enlist their help in teaching your son. That way when he gets to school, if he hasn't figured out the standing up to pee yet, his teacher can help and can keep the other kids from picking on him.

My son is 5 and still sits down. He doesn't want to stand up. He sees his father go all the time. Don't push standing, worry more about handwashing etc. He'll stand when he's ready.

~~i take it his daddy is not in the picture, from what you are saying.. if you have any brothers or if your dad is around or if you have any guy friends maybe they can show him the ropes, or you can just go in with him and tell him you want to teach him how the big boys do it, get some chereos or fruitloops to use for target practice and before long he'll be a pro.~~

Just explain it all to him. Be honest and firm about it, working on it until school starts. But I would just have him start standing up when he goes and tell him that you can't sit on the "potties" at school.
