I am trying to make a device that is computer controlled. It is essentially a robot. I would like to be able to control it from my computer through the USB port. Does anyone know of some site online that would help me learn how to make something like this?

It is a rather difficult project, if you do not have serious engineering knowledge!.
You can get a lot of robot toys that may do what you want, but again, they are very limited.
The real way to do what you want is much more complex.
I can suggest ATMEL micro-controllers (86 series, with USB protocol included).
You can then control your model through the USB port, but you will need to write a program for your PC, a program for your micro, and design all the other electro-mechanics that relate to the job! It is really a whole engineering project!
