I have a black traditional "doll-faced" persian who has black spots inside his mouth (not on the tongue but along the roof on his mouth and gumline of the bottom teeth).

I've had him since he was 6 months old and he's 3 years old now, but the black spots have always been there. They don't seem to cause him any pain or problems and he seems perfectly happy. He's fine when he eats hard or crunchy food as well.

His teeth are white and clean, and don't rock around or look as if they're about to fall out or anything. Is this a sign of gum disease or is it just a birthmark?

By the way he has bad breath and I brush his teeth regularly. It'd be great if you guys could help me out. Thanks.

You brush your cat's teeth regularly!? Wow. You are a saint.
I'm not 100%, but I think they're totally normal - just standard marking. I've got two cats, one solid black persian (hey!) and a striped maine coon, and both of them have got colored spots just like you described.

Have you ever seen a shaved cat? They've got spots all over their skin, kind of the same deal.

Hi there...yes, this very normal. It is called pigmentation similar to humans having freckles. Some cats have this on their paw pads. If they have pink pads some will have black spots there as well.

I think it's fantastic that you brush your cats teeth regularly. I only wish more people would learn how to do this as it isn't that difficult to train a cat to accept brushing. I hope your vet has shown which teeth need brushing most -- the outside of the upper and lower back molars.

It's just pigmentation. A lot of cats have that in their mouths and have different colored gums. That is completely normal. As for the bad breath I would ask a vet. Sometimes bad breath can signify an underlying health problem.

I would assume it is normal. You say they've always been there. Is he gettting more of them? I guess if no - then it should be fine.

My cat had some black spots on her "fingers" all her life. I think it's kind of the same.

Sounds pretty normal to me. I have one that has back paws with every other toe black and every other toe pink. He has this ink-like spot on his nose that I don't think he was born with, bur has been there several years. All cats are different.
