the original meaning of Pagan comes from the olden times when people lived in villages where the people were all christian. The people who lived outside the village were called pagans. It is now come to mean a non-Christian. So since a Wiccan does not fit into the Christian category, it is a type of paganism.

Wicca and Paganism are sometimes used interchangably, but they are not the same thing. Wicca is a specific Pagan religion. Not all people who practice an earth-based religion worship with traditional Wiccan rites, nor do all Pagans adhere to the Wiccan Law of Three. Druid rites and practices, for instance, do not usually cast circles before worship, while Asatruar frequently create the space in group worship by setting up the worship space with banners and so on as part of the rite itself, and Native American and Hindi practices are very different from the European ones.

I recommend Wikipedia and Sacred-Texts.org to find out more about the various paths.

A pagan is someone who worships nature. A Wiccan is also a pagan, but is more specific in the rituals. A pagan is not necessarily a Wiccan, but all Wiccans are pagans. Peace to all.

Wicca is a specific religion under the Pagan umbrella. There is a huge difference. Hellenic, Druidic and Asatru bear very little resemblance to Wicca or each other for that matter, yet they can all be considered Pagan religions as well.

Wicca is a defined structure of beliefs (god and goddess, certain symbols, etc. . .) and is designed to be friendly and open to newcomers.

the definition of pagan on the other hand is a more complicated situaiton. The word pagan can be traced back to the days of Ancient Rome, and usually referred to country dweller. At the time Christian religion was becoming dominant throughout the urban cities, but in the rural lands christianity was sparse and nonaggressive.

In recent centuries, especially teh 20th century, the term pagan has evolved to encompass any kind of non-organized religious grouping (hinduisim, christianity, judaisim, islam, etc.) and therfore the individual has more control over their personal belief systems and their concepts of higher being. Organized Wicca is "pagan-friendly" but the indivduals interpretations can and will vary thus adding to the fluctuating nature of spiritual earth-based religions.

wiccan king,
As I understand it, Pagan is like a Genus. Wicca is a species of Pagan.

In a binomial nomenclature definition:
Paganus wiccus. ( I'm totally making this up!) lol

In terms of witchcraft pagans are more connected with nature, Wicca is something that started in the 60's when pagan religion was "rediscovered". It's more coven oriented.
