I am a proponent of the draft. But for other reasons other than what most others think. I believe we can reduce the problems in other areas of our culture.
1. Over-crowding in prisons. Bring back the option of allowing those who have committed minor, non-violent crimes the chance to redeem themselves and have their mistake expunged with good military service.
2. It would reduce the problems of unemployment in the country and help alot of the under-priviledged socio-economic people in our society by getting them off the streets and committing crimes and such. In addition, they get an education and learn skills they may not have the opportunity to do being poor.
3. Is gives the US a larger pool of Reserves with which to tap so that deployments don't become so stressful for servicemen having to return to the areas of operations so often.
Israel has a mandatory 2 yrs service for both men and women. Everyone over there is capable of defending their country, for God's sake. And they are proud of it. How difficult is it to devote a little something for the defense of your country.....a country who has spilt alot of blood so that everyone in it can talk as much cr@p as they do about it?
We wouldn't have what we have if not for the brave people who have served and died for all of in this country.
Everyone just worries about dying!
We are all going to die one day. If you die serving your country, then you have died a hero's death. WITH HONOR AND SACRIFICE! What more could anyone want?
Many people die everyday from crimes etc. And we say that they died senseless deaths. Servicemen who die for the ideologies of their country or for the good of other peoples ( a good deed in the eyes of God I am sure) have died an honorable death. One to be proud of.
Would you parents want your child to die fighting for their country or die being shot up in a gang shootout, or in a vehicle accident where they were drunk or hit by a drunk driver or countless other incidents that we consider senseless?...........I would think not.
oops.....I am going to get off my soapbox now.

I assume your talking about the U.S. Army.
Several politic ans (I think they are all Republicans) have called for the draft. But it would be political suicide for the President to reinstate the draft. America was divided by the draft during Vietnam. With a few exceptions, the only people who want the U.S. to go through that again are people who hate America. In my home country of Canada the draft caused major problems during the first and second world wars. This was in large part because of Quebec. French Canadians opposed both wars. There hasn't been a draft in Canada since the end of WW2. No Prime Minister would want to put Canada through that again.
Unfortunately the U.S. army is stretched to the breaking-point. For anyone who thinks this is a good thing, remember, after the U.S. the worlds most powerful nation is China. Remember Tianamen Square?
If the U.S. can't increase enlistment (unlike so long as Americans keep dying in Iraq almost everyday) the draft may be the only way for America to remain a superpower.
However, there is a way out!
The U.S. Army has already started to offer citizenship to people who enlist. With millions of Mexicans wanting to move to the U.S. this is a great incentive.
The biggest problem is that the army would be overrun by people born in other countries. This is a problem in an army because loyalty to the nation is so important to the well being of the fighting force. Rome hired many mercenaries before the empire fell.

I haven't heard anything about it. It would not be the Army that brought it back, it would be the U.S. Government that votes it in, and draft inductees would go to all branches of the Military, not just the Army. If they start drafting people again, I would have to think it would be the beginning of WWIII, and the end of the world. Since women serve in the Military, would that mean that women would now be drafted also?

They will not bring back the draft. There is a catch that a lot of people sign for with out knowing. If you sign your conract for say 4 years. Your not done at 4. You still are on a inactive reserve. Which means you get out and you dont have anything to do with the military but if they need you they can call you back up. The length of this depends on how many years you signed for. They have started doing this...

Enigma and a... doesn't know what he/she? is talking about. The only discussion of reinstating the draft in Congress in the past decade was a bill sponsored by 13 Democrats for the sole purpose of claiming the bill existed during the last Presidential election. The Republicans forced a vote just to kill it. Only 2 of the 13 sponsors had the guts to vote for their own bill.

No. For one thing, it's a political disaster. Also the U.S. politicans want to downsize the military (the reason for the base closures). The stories about a shortage of troops is unwarranted. Only about 1/10 of our forces are tied up in Iraq and Afganistan plus the U.S. military has several things that make people wanting to have a career out of it quit (can't be gay, the promotion clause which states you aren't given a promotion in an alloted amount of time that you are forced to quit).

Probably not, but that won't stop the anti-bush idiots from threatening other people with this idea to get them to think their way.

I hope not! I have 3 boys whom I love very dearly. I don't want them to be forced to fight a war that they don't want to fight!
