Disregarding zoning issues or your city's ordinances on how many pets are allowed, I'd say it's a personal choice contingent upon many factors such as house size, breed of dogs, size of dogs, specific needs of the dogs (are any ill, disabled, etc. ) number of 'caretakers' for the dogs in the home, financial ability to care for the dog and responsibility of the dog owner.

It depends. I think the average person (or 2 people) living in the average size single family home with an average sized yard could happily live with 4 averaged sized dogs. But when you mix that up with kids, long work hours, the mother in law living with her 22 year old cat in the basement, a backyard that cannot be fenced in due to community regulations, and the quick reproducing gerbils that escaped 3 weeks ago... even one can seem to be too much. I know that I will always have dogs, I love them. There will never be too many in my house. But this is only if they are taking care of. Under the care of irresponsible people, one is way too much. I know people who are currently living with 47 dogs of varying breeds. They make it work! They are breeders and have a kennel license though, they do rescue work. You need to know the laws of your state and county. Unfortunately what you think is an okay number might not be what your local law makers think... It really just depends on who, what kinda dogs, and where... What seems like A LOT of dogs to someone might be the perfect number for someone else.

There isn't a definitive answer. It will depend on the size of the dog, activity level, and size of the house.
The biggest concern is time and environment. You need to have the time and money to take care of the dogs well. That means feeding, keeping water clean, walks, vet bills, affection/attention.
If you can't afford the time and money, having 1 dog in a 5000 sq. foot house is 1 dog too many.
The environment is important also. The more pets you add, the harder it is to keep the house and yard clean. Cleaning up one dog's poop for the day will take only a couple of minutes. Cleaning up 4 dog's worth could take 10 min.

It will depend on the person, the love you have to offer for your pet, your finances, the size of the house and what type of dog and the need for a dog in your house is. Meaning is the dog for being a family pet or for protection, or both and how many people are in the house. I would generally say 3 is the max for the dogs, i have one myself and thats enough for us, so you will have to go with your own instincts.

Given the rise of notable animal collectors , I think the number of dogs should be limited to the number with which one can personally work, give quality care to and maintain personable working partnerships.
For some people this can mean 20 sled dogs, for others, it might mean 2 Great Pyrenees, 1 Pap, and 1 Chi or perhaps half a dozen cattle dogs. For some people it might mean only one dog, regardless of size.
I'm happy with three of my breed but I don't want more than five.

Check with your local regulations. They will tell you how many dogs you can have without having to get a kennel permit. If you keep your house clean of poop, pee, and fleas, and can give the dogs the exercise they need, I would say three dogs is the maximum anyone can reasonably care for.

Well it depends on, One: How big your home is and Two: if you have enough time to give each one the right amount of love and care they need. Cause I own four healthy beautiful American Staffordshire Terriers and I live in a one bed room home... Were making it just fine... and No my house don't smell like dog or poo!!!

How big is the house? Who lives in the house? Do they like dogs? What kind of dogs, big or little, tame or aggressive?
In most cases 2 or 3 is plenty.

Anything over four.If you have anymore lthan that your taking away from the ones you have like being able to cover vet care treats special stuff and attention. And when you have more than two the dogs start acting as a pack and there harder to control

Okay, most of you will probably think I am weird. We have 22 chihuahuas and a blue heeler mix. We have a big 2 story house. Our dogs are all kept inside except for the blue heeler. They get excellent health care, are well fed and loved. They sleep with us, well most of them do. The house does not smell like dogs. We don't have carpet excpet for rooms the dogs do not go into. They are spoiled and loved like they are our own children.
