Yep. There is a concert of endocrinology, hormones and balances that has to be maintained, like a ballet of levels of progesterone are required to maintain a pregnancy. Sometimes it suddenly drops off and the whole litter can be lost.

Sometimes anxious breeders oversupplement, fish oil & other vitamins, and that can cause fetuses to be aborted. A female with an illness can lose her pups. If the uterus is thickened or too thin, miscarriage can happen.

Partial litter loss can happen via incompatible genetics, such as pathologically abnormal pigmentation in the fetus via merle or some spotting traits that can accompany lack of normal development in the organs and nervous system.

Litter sizes can sometimes seem 'normal' but what would have been 9 or 5 pups in a litter is sometimes 5 or 2 because almost half the puppies died due to genetic factors -- and usually these are the silent killers since many breeders are not aware of the problems. They just have smaller litters and they may feel this is normal. The sharper ones may notice that only some pairs produce smaller litters, but if nicked with a different mate, the litters are larger.

Yes. Several things can cause a dog to spontaneously abort a litter but usually before you even realize she was pregnant. They can also go into premature labor and lose their puppies that way :(( Environmental factors can play a huge part in this.

our dog had pups and within th litter came a hamster size dark green body or a perfectly formed pup,it must have died in the early weeks or her pregnancy but her body didnt reject it it was just born with the litter as norn at the end of her 9wk preg,im sure if a dog loses pups in early wekks tho she would bleed and need med care unless its in same case as ours were it was only one pup so body carried it to carry on with pups that were growing ok,even i was shocked at that as it was really weird

Yes, especially with first litters. I've also heard that puppies in early development can be reabsorbed by the mother's body somehow.
