I think this would all depend on many things. How you feel about him, as a person, what the reasons for the breakup were, things like that. If you were both friends before hand, then it should be relatively easy, maybe after a little time. If you weren't, and sort of just fell in to a "relationship" right away, then you may have to have some time apart, and reconnect with yourself. This happens all the time. We meet someone that we are really attracted to, and begin to date or be intimate with. After some time, we discover more and more about them, as a "person", and find that we really don't "like" them. It's like we're doing things backwards. We should be "liking" them first, and then falling later.

If feelings are hurt, (yours or his,) it may be difficult to expect a friendship after the relationship is over. You will need to judge that for yourself. Sit him down, and discuss your feelings about this issue. Use honesty and direct eye contact. Thank him for what he brought to the relationship, and let him know how you feel. Inside, forgive him, and yourself, for anything that needs "forgiving" and then try to move on, as best you can. Best of luck to you. I know it's awfully hard.
