I've traveled to many different countries in South America and Europe and a lot of these countries supposedly hate the US.

However, whenever I go there I'm welcomed with open arms and people seem to LOVE the fact that I'm from the US.

Is this just one big lie or have people actually been treated badly internationally because they are American?

Dear no body hate the american peoople , but it sure every body hate the american govt double standard policies on many international issues , even the american people ( other than some special people who control the KEYS of the us gvt ) , have the same feelings as rest of the world have , the americans are to think , by whom they are used , and for whom they are working,
Dear if someone says , I hate the america, or even the americans , it never mean he hate the people , it is only for the cruel policy makers , and such people are not only the enemies of rest of the world , but also the american people , such policies equally harms the american people and REAL american interests , strengthning some others and defaming and harming the americans ,

The answer above raises a good point. If we are in Germany, as stated above, we are told to speak German. We in the US, however, are labeled as "racist" if we say to another, "speak English."

Most people living outside the US know us only from the evenings' slanted newscasts. So, if we did "pull in our horns", and adopt an isolationist attitude as we did prior to our entry into WWII, cut off foreign aid, international trade, etc., again we would be criticized or accused of turning our collective backs on the world.

No sir. The US is held to a standard of complete accountability for all of its actions, past and present, while other nations have gotten a pass. But, just for fun, let us look at the whole picture.

There was an "incident" in the Falkland Islands when Brittain and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher educated the inhabitants there that freedom from colonization would no longer be tolerated.

How about the "apartheid" philosophy that the Dutch granted to Africa? I hardly ever hear about that, or the Boer wars, but that does go back a little further.

The Soviet Union wasted nine or so years fighting in Afganistan. Where was the righteously indignant European community then? Why is this no longer an issue, but US involvement in Viet Nam is? (A foot note here: If you were born after 1960 you know nothing about the war in Viet Nam. You just had to be there to understand)

There was another American President of the recent past, a republican, the same as President Bush, and scaring the hell out of everybody, labeled as a war monger, villified, with the play on words as Ronald "Ray Guns."

History has proved he was a man of vision and fortitude. Under his watch, we saw the end of the cold war and the tremendous amount of monies wasted pursuing armaments that were hopefully never to be used. Should we now rewind the movie and reconstruct the Berlin Wall? It may provide some much needed employment in some European countries.

Of course there are many political persuasions contrary to the political stance and foreign policy measures of the American government. Up for a little reading? How about Mein Kampf, the Communist Manifesto, or the Little Red Book (aka the collected works of Chairman Mao).

Let's induct Nikita Krushev and Fidel Castro into the political hall of fame. We can put their busts right along side Idi Amin, Aristide, Manuel Noriega, Kim Jung Il, Hideki Tojo, Joseph Stalin,
or (enter your favorite dictator here).

Let's not overlook the "police action" that was America fighting communist Chinese army troops and pilots flying Russian MIGs in the skies over North Korea. With practically no help from any of our allies or the international community at large, we fought the war to a stalemate. That worked out real well, now, didn't it? Here we are, a mere 50 years down the road, with a crazy person in the persona of one Kim Jung Il, who would probably sell a nuke to any mideastern country that could pony up the cash for the purchase, which is ANY of them.

THOSE people will use it. Las Vegas, Nevada, is the gambling Mecca of the US, and the odds makers there will take a bet on anything. If the bet was whether Iran will send its first nuke in a northerly or southerly direction, it would get no better than odds of one to one. A coin toss. They don't need a long range ballistic missle delivery system either. All that is needed is one crazy child of Allah to drive a rented truck and deliver the thing right to your front door.

Not to worry. We won't let that happen either. We'll spend a couple years of total gross national product and more spilled American blood to keep you alive and free, just as we have done in the past. Then, you will have more fodder to use to bash America yet again.

So, everyone can buy into the BS hype if they wish, for it makes no difference. Which ever way we turn there will be a solid round of America bashing. But, seeing as how America is constantly made a villain, then it would follow that the deluge of immigrants (this IS the immigration category, remember?) pouring into the big bad USA are nuts for wanting to live here, work here, attend school here, raise a family here and with the ultimate goal of becoming a US citizen.

This is illogical, yes? So, I would have to accept that things are not what they are portrayed to be, or a significant portion of the population of the planet is insane. It can't be both.

For the most part people I have interacted with in other countries have been very nice. I don't know if they necessarily love that I'm the US, but they don't seem to care.
I have only had one problem internationally. I was in Berlin with some friends, in the process of checking into a hotel. Some man overhead us speaking English, called us a**hole Americans, and told us to speak German. But, everyone else in the Berlin area was very nice.

Most countries don't hate America that is hype like every Russian wanted to destroy us, but many DISTRUST USA for good reason try reading the books The Prize,( The Far East) The Ugly American (The Near East) and books on what we did in Nicaragua in the 80's for reasons why they don't trust USA.

Because of the policies and attitudes directed at selected countries by a small minority of americans which has caused misery and greater hardship in those countries than ever before. the majority of US citizens now suffer the indignity.By the way not everyone hates americans and are welcomed by many.Lets have peace and tolerance toward each other and the maybe we will stop burying our loved ones who have died because of the fanactics in the east and the west

Anti-Americanism is NOT in any way new in Europe (or elsewhere). Some want to pretend it just started. Much of Europe blamed the U.S.--and found the Soviet Union romantic--during the Cold War. But despite the omni-present anti-Americanism, actual individual Europeans have always--or nearly always--been very decent and friendly to us when we visit. So I agree with you that they are friendly to us when we visit. But they also will still say, to our very faces in conversation sometimes, about how low-brow we all are over here, about how capitalism is evil, we are all consumer-hogs, we don't read books, our foreign policy is infantile, and so on, there is no end to their pretentious attitude. And without any merit; it is a kind of "racism" they are allowed to have. And yet, you can still have lots of fun there, as I did when I lived there, and make great friends.

I think that american people are warm & friendly. They have good family values & neighbourly love. But that might be the problem. They seem to be ignorant to the real problems around the world in a kind of selfish effort to build a nice house

Evil. They Devil wanted to be God. And it blows itself up out of proportion. And makes us think that all there is, is evil. And it's
so big you can't do anything about it. But evil isn't that big.
They say 500 people got killed with hand guns in New York
City last year. And any loss of life is tragic. But there are
8,000,000 people in New York City.
Put evil in its place!

In Japan there are actually stores with the signs "NO Westerners allowed" and "NO Americans Allowed".
Also if a Japanese woman dates/ marries/ has sex with an American (of any color) they are considered VERY dirty and Japanese men will NOT have anything to do with them.
