My cat uses a cat door to go in and out of the house but a stray cat is using it now to get into the house and sprays and eats his food. I tried a magnetic cat door but my cat uses his paws (I never knew as it is in a closet!) to open the door and he doesn't get his neck close enough to unlatch it. He can't get in... He is traumatized, jumpy and nervous and I think the other cat is ferral. What could I do to deter him from coming in but still allow my cat access ? Anyone try the infared one? How close does he have to be? He's never worn a collar and I live in the woods and afraid he will loose it or hang up on it.
Thanks!

Cats are creatures of habit. At least mine seem to be.

Close down the cat door for a while so that your cat can't get out and the stray cat can't get in. The stray cat should give up after a while and move along. Make sure to remove other items that could attract/appeal to the stray cat. Don't leave food/water/garbage outside.

Your cat might not be happy while you have the door sealed off but once he can come and go without this stranger stopping in, he'll be happy again.

Another low cost option would be to stand guard inside the door and as the stray cat starts to come in, spray him with water. You'd have to do it pretty quickly so that he decides to back up rather than run in.

Hope all goes well.

You could install a lock with an electronic pass code that only your cat knows. Make sure you tell your cat to lock the door behind him. The only problem I can see with this is that if your cat forgets the pass code, he will need an email address to retrieve a new one. Hope this helps.

Post a placcard at the cat door..."Cats owed by other humas will be shot along with their owners and cats without owners will be shot along with the neighbours".

Any cat that wants to come in my house, is fine by me. The more the merrier.
